Operando and in situ techniques are becoming mandatory to study Li-ion, post-Li-ion, and solid-state batteries. The capability of a real-time characterization of electrochemical behaviors and reactivities of batteries is critical to decipher the underlying chemistries and improve the battery performance and lifetime.

In the PEPR Batteries OPENSTORM project, synergies are being sought between existing characterization methods to accelerate the study of future generations of batteries. Studying phenomena of a very different nature (chemical, structural, morphological) operating on different time and space scales requires combining techniques in a multimodal and multitechnique approach, using ion beam imaging/spectroscopy, for example.

In this context, the postdoctoral associate will be in charge of developing an operando/in situ cell compatible with ion beam analysis techniques at the nuclear microprobe (CEA IRAMIS) and neutrons/X-Ray imaging techniques at synchrotron/neutrons facilities (CEA IRIG). The postdoctoral associate will be responsible for testing the electrochemical performance of Na-ion batteries in the newly developed cell with the support of researchers from IRAMIS and IRIG. The sodium distribution in full cells will then be particularly investigated in operando mode to understand the effect of cycling parameters on the Na-ion battery's performance.
