Working environment and context :

The Nantes Atlantic Electrical Energy Research Institute (IREENA UR 4642 - https://ireena.univ-nantes.fr/ ) is located in Saint-Nazaire, France, and organized into three thematic research units(TRU). IREENA's TRUs focus respectively on inductive techniques in complex environments (TRU1), fault-tolerant energy conversion systems (TRU2), and high-penetration renewable energy management (TRU3), supporting both fundamental research and industry-relevant innovation.

Thee research carried out at IREENA deals with the energy management, sizing and intégration of new energies within applications ranging from decentralized energy production (distributed generation, and Microgrids) to transport solutions (aeronautics, automotive, maritime). More specifically, the IREENA laboratory research focuses on the implémentation and design of power chains integrating new technologies of conversion, production and storage. In addition to the technological aspect, the IREENA research deals with methodological aspects related to the development of advanced control and energy management strategies for different energy systems.

The SEA-POWER project, conducted in collaboration with VEBRAT E-Mobility Solutions, aims to investigate and enhance the contribution of ESS in supporting power quality and stability in SMGs through the provision of ancillary services. The project will develop intelligent energy management and control methodologies using optimization and Al tools to coordinate and optimize the role of ESS within the onboard microgrid. This project finds it context in the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas émissions and improve the energy efficiency of maritime transport is accelerating the shift toward electric ships. These next-generation vessels rely on low-emission on-board power generation, the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs), and advanced energy storage systems (ESS).

However, the implémentation of Shipboard Microgrids (SMGs) présents technical challenges, especially during offshore operations where stability and power quality can be compromised due to propulsion-related dynamic loads, intermittent renewables, and disturbances in load or generation. These resuit in voltage and frequency déviations that must be actively mitigated.

Key missions of the postdoctoral researcher:

  • Model and simulate shipboard microgrids, integrating realistic dynamic marine loads, DERs,and energy storage systems.
  • Design and implement advanced control and energy management strategies, including centralized / distributed control approaches, for ESS coordination and ancillary service delivery.
  • Develop optimization algorithms and Al-based methods to reduce diesel generator usage, lower émissions, and enable efficient demand-side management.
  • Validate proposed control strategies in real-time usingthe Real-Time Simulator testbed of the IREENA laboratory.
  • Collaborate closely with VEBRAT E-Mobility Solutions to align research with industry needs and contribute to innovation in maritime électrification.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact journals and present results at national and
    international conférences.
