The Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU Linz) and the Technische Universität Wien (TU Vienna) are joining forces to establish a Doctoral College for Computational Sustainability, combining the strengths and competences of complementary disciplines at both universities, and aiming to create and approve transdisciplinary knowledge in key research areas of computational sustainability. The aspirational vision of the Doctoral College is a world in which computational sciences significantly contribute, support, drive and foster global, regional and national efforts towards sustainable development.
For this joint Doctoral College, we invite applications from outstanding candidates eager to contribute to cutting-edge research in computational sustainability.
The successful candidate will pursue a dissertation project with working title
Sustainable Water Recovery via Advanced Flotation and Computational Modelling,
see a summary of the planned project https://www.jku.at/institut-fuer-verfahrenstechnik/forschung/forschungs…;

The dissertation project will be co-supervised by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Mark W. Hlawitschka (JKU Linz), and Univ.Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alfredo Soldati (TU Wien).

The Institute of Chemical Process Engineering (Verfahrenstechnik) of the Johannes Kepler University Linz is equipped with laboratory and technicum space to design processes from laboratory scale towards pilot plant scale. In recent years, a test stand for nozzles to generate the finely dispersed bubbles was established. A pilot plant facility for the investigation of flotation was jointly build up with the Institute of Measurement Technology was established.

At the Institute of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer, TU Vienna, strong expertise on computational simulations in turbulence is available. Both have access to the austrian scientific cluster (https://asc.ac.at/home/). JKU Linz will provide office and laboratory space, analytical instrumentation, and in-house software tools for CFD and image analysis. TU Vienna will contribute access to the turbulence tank and developed simulation codes. Cross-institutional scientific support will be continuously provided.

Job Duties:

  • Driving the mechanistic understanding of bubble-particle interactions (tomo-PIV), investigate the role of microscale turbulence
  • Data-Driven and Physics-based flotation modelling, develop and integrate CFD-PBM models supported by experimental data
  • Experimental investigation of small scale and large scale flotation processes
  • Writing a dissertation and publications
  • Participation in scientific events, in particular of the doctoral college
  • Collaboration in research and teaching tasks as well as examinations

Your Qualifications:

  • Completed Master's degree in chemistry, fluid mechanics, mechanical engineering (candidates already registered for a PhD or with an accomplished PhD are not eligible)
  • Solid knowledge in fluid mechanics, turbulence, multiphase flows and transport phenomena
  • Experience with experimental fluid dynamics (e. g. PIV, Tomo-PIV, optical measurement techniques) or willingness to acquire these skills
  • Familiarity with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), ideally including turbulence modeling, multiphase flow or population balance modeling
  • Programming/scripting skills for data analysis and modeling (e. g. Python, MATLAB, C++)
  • Experience in data processing, image analysis or numerical simulation is an advantage
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) - essential for communication, publication and collaboration (level C1) and good knowledge of German (level B2)
  • Strong motivation to engage in interdisciplinary and collaborative research (between TU Vienna and JKU Linz)
  • Ability to work indepentendly, think critically and contribute to the development of new experimental and modeling methods
  • Good organizational skills and capacity to manage experimental campaigns and data workflows
