Postdoctoral Position in High-Frequency Phononics and Hybrid Nanomaterials

Project overview:
Phonons—the quanta of lattice vibrations—are key carriers of energy and information, much like photons and electrons. This project explores the emerging field of nanophononics, focusing on the manipulation of GHz–THz acoustic phonons in architected hybrid materials. We aim to uncover how elasticity, photo-thermal effects, and hypersonic stopbands can be tuned in polymer-grafted nanoparticle (GNP) assemblies, revealing novel metamaterial and phoxonic properties under ambient and high-pressure conditions.

The work combines experimental nanomechanics, photonics, and materials science, using advanced methods such as Brillouin light scattering (BLS), frequency-domain thermoreflectance (FDTR), and rheometry, in collaboration with partners from Poland, Germany, Spain, Greece, and the USA.

Main research tasks:

ㆍExperimental investigation of elastic and acoustic properties of hybrid nanostructures using BLS.

ㆍStudy of phonon dispersion and stopbands in GNP-based metamaterials.

ㆍAnalysis of photo-thermal and mechanical responses under variable conditions.

ㆍData interpretation, manuscript preparation, and presentation of results at international meetings.

ㆍCollaboration and short research stays at partner institutions (e.g., Barcelona, Mainz).

Candidate profile:
We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a background in experimental condensed-matter physics, nanomechanics, or materials science, preferably with experience in light-scattering spectroscopy or acousto-optic methods.
