The goal of the Opus 27 project “Ab-initio Green’s Function Methods for Describing Magnetic Compounds with Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling” (Principal Investigator: Dominika Zgid), funded by the National Science Centre of Poland, is to develop (derive and implement) an extended relativistic two-component atomic mean-field formalism (extended atomic mean field, eamf) within the self-consistent GW method and to optimize this method for realistic high-performance computer calculations. Subsequently, this newly implemented method will be used in combination with embedding techniques to describe phenomena in magnetic solids and molecules exhibiting strong spin–orbit coupling effects.

The candidate is expected to have expertise in the development of theoretical or numerical methods for solid-state physics or theoretical chemistry. We also expect experience in programming, motivation and independence in solving scientific problems.

The planned employment will be realized within the project “Ab-initio Green’s Function Methods for Describing Magnetic Compounds with Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling” financed by the Opus 27 grant awarded by the National Science Centre of Poland of which Dominika Zgid is the main contractor. The planned employment period is for 24 months.

The candidates have to conform to the conditions stated in art. 113 of Higher Education Law dated 20.07.2018. (Journal of Laws of the Republic of Poland 2024, item 1571 with further amendments)

Skills/Qualifications

We expect expertise in developing theoretical or numerical methods for solid-state physics or theoretical chemistry. Useful experience includes:

(1) methods for describing relativistic effects in molecular or solid-state systems,

(2) knowledge of numerical aspects of Green’s function methods,

(3) familiarity with numerical techniques, and

(4) experience in method development within large software packages.

We also expect experience in programming, motivation and independence in solving scientific problems.

The call is open to persons meeting the conditions specified in art. 113 of the Act of 20 July 2018 - Law on Higher Education and Science (Polish Journal of Laws of 2024, item 1571, as amended).

Specific Requirements

- Fulfilment of the requirements set out in Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2024, item 1571, consolidated text)

- At the time of employment, the Candidate must hold a doctoral degree for no longer than 7 years (counting subsequent years from the year following the award of the doctoral degree). This period is extended by 1 year for each born or adopted child for women, and 1 year for each child for men, provided that they have taken breaks from work for at least 6 consecutive months. Furthermore, a 1-year extension is granted, regardless of gender, in the event of a break in research work for other reasons lasting at least 6 consecutive months.

- Substantial academic achievements

- Not affiliated with the University of Warsaw as an employee

- Interest in the subject and motivation for research.

- Specialization in developing theoretical or numerical methods for the description of solids or for theoretical chemistry.

Experience in the following areas will be beneficial:

(1) methods for describing relativistic effects in molecular systems or solids,

(2) knowledge of numerical aspects of Green’s functions,

(3) familiarity with numerical methods,

(4) development of methods within large software packages.

- Very good programming skills in C/C++, Python, Fortran, etc. are required.

- The candidate must have an excellent command of English.

- The candidate must meet the requirements established by the National Science Centre for individuals employed in postdoctoral fellow-type positions.

- A PhD in physics or related sciences obtained from an entity other than the entity where employment for this position is planned.

In addition, we expect:

- expertise in the development of theoretical or numerical methods for solid-state physics or theoretical chemistry

- motivation and independence in solving scientific problems

- If hired, we expect the University of Warsaw to be the primary workplace for the successful candidate.
