CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR ONE POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BIPD) WITHIN THE SCOPE OF THE ‘EDIGIPOLIS’ PROJECT (COMPETE2030-FEDER-00925800), ONGOING AT THE CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND INTERVENTION IN EDUCATION (CIIE) OF THE FACULTY OF PSYCHOLOGY AND EDUCATION SCIENCES OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO (FPCEUP)

The Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto (FPCEUP) welcomes applications for a postdoctoral research fellowship for the research project “EDigiPolis – Articulating School Engagement and Political Learning: Understanding and Promoting Youth Democratic Practices and Critical Thinking through Digital-Visual Tools” (project no. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00925800), co-financed by the Innovation and Digital Transition Programme - COMPETE 2030, Portugal 2030 and the European Union, and financed by national funds through the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, IP (FCT). This project is being developed at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) of FPCEUP, under the coordination of Carla Malafaia, Assistant Professor at FPCEUP and researcher at CIIE.

The project addresses political-educational concerns and young people's repertoires of (dis)engagement through the integrated and innovative application of methods that combine offline and online approaches, educational software that generates pluralistic debate, and algorithms developed to detect visual political action. These methods and their articulation will be tested and refined through their application in various contexts, including with young activists and NEETs from both coastal and inland areas of the country. The project will begin with a synergistic interaction between AI and ethnography, progressing through a quasi-experimental study and a participatory methodology to enable the co-creation, led by young people, of educational and political solutions that are sensitive to their specific contexts.

2. Admission requirements, to be proven by documentary evidence:

All individuals of legal age who meet the requirements below, supported by documentary evidence, may apply for this fellowship:

1. Hold a PhD in Educational Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Communication, Anthropology, Political Science or International Relations.

2. Have obtained the PhD degree within the three years prior to the date of application.

3. Have carried out the research work that led to the award of the PhD degree at an institution other than the host institution (CIIE).

4. Solid research skills in social sciences, using qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies, with the use of data analysis software, to be proven through a thesis and/or dissertation, reports, articles, certificates or other documents.

5. Proficient command of Portuguese (applicable only if the candidate is not a native Portuguese speaker, in which case supporting documentation must be provided).

3. Preferred conditions, proven by documentation:

1. Authorship, as first author, of articles in scientific journals indexed in SCImago Journal Rank/Scopus (SJR) and/or Journal Citation ReportsTM (JCR).

2. Research experience in participatory methodologies.

3. Experience in research work with young people.

4. Experience of participation in nationally and/or internationally funded research projects, specifying the research tasks in which the candidate was involved.

5. Experience in organising scientific events.

6. Proficient command of English (to be verified during the interview stage in the case of candidates admitted to the competition).

7. Availability for frequent travel (to be stated in the letter of motivation).

4. Work plan:

The fellowship holder will support the project team in carrying out the tasks outlined in the application, while also collaborating on other activities aligned with the project’s objectives, namely providing support for the following tasks:

1. Participating in the collection, processing and analysis of data.

2. Running Hackathon and CiCli-Lab activities, participatory phases of the project.

3. Writing of reports and scientific articles, and presenting work at scientific meetings.

4. Organising meetings and dissemination events.

5. Assisting in other functions to support the management and execution of the project’s research and dissemination activities.

5. Applicable law and regulation:

This call is governed by the provisions of the University of Porto Research Fellowships Regulation (Regulation 184/2021), and other national applicable legal frameworks related to academic degrees, administrative procedures, and the research fellow statute.

6. Workplace:

The workplace shall be at CIIE facilities at FPCEUP, Rua Alfredo Allen, 4200-135 Porto or other locations necessary for carrying out the work plan, under the scientific supervision of Carla Malafaia.

7. Duration and start of the fellowship:

The research fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, scheduled to start in December 2025. It may be renewed depending on institutional needs and financial availability, up to the project's duration limit.

8. Monthly maintenance allowance:

8.1. 1851,00 Euros/month.

8.2. Paid via bank transfer, includes personal accident insurance.

8.3. Eligibility to join Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme if over 6 months duration.

9. Selection methods:

9.1. Curriculum Assessment (CA) and Interview (INT); INT = 30% of final classification.

9.2. Each method is rated 0-100 points.

9.3. CA Criteria: Academic path (30%), Methodological expertise (20%), Scientific production (15%), Funded project participation (15%), Work with youth (10%), Motivation (10%).

9.4. INT Criteria: Communication and fluency in PT/EN (40%), Work plan knowledge (60%).

9.5. Interviews may be remote upon request.

9.6. Failure to attend interview = exclusion.

9.7. Final Score = (0.70 * CA) + (0.30 * INT).

9.8. Minimum passing score: 51 points.

9.9. Selection panel reserves the right not to award the fellowship if no suitable candidate is found.
