The Biobizkaia Health Research Institute (IIS Biobizkaia) announces a selection process for the hiring of a Researcher (PhD) specializing in Bioinformatics. The candidate will join the Immunopathology Group, led by Dr. Francisco Borrego, to work on the project PID2024-162509OB-I00, entitled: "Cytokine-induced universal memory NK cells for cancer immunotherapy: strategies to prevent rejection and enhance infiltration and antitumor activity."
This project is funded by the Spanish State Research Agency (Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities).
Contract objective: The main role will be to perform advanced, high-performance bioinformatic analyses associated with omics data and cellular characterization for the project. The ideal candidate will have very solid knowledge of bioinformatics and demonstrate flexibility to collaborate on experimental laboratory tasks if required by the research.

Skills/Qualifications

• - Main Tasks (Advanced Bioinformatics)
• o High-Throughput Sequencing Data Analysis (NGS):
• - Processing, quality control, and comprehensive analysis of omics data (RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, proteomics, metabolomics) to identify differentially expressed genes, proteins, metabolites, pathways, and signatures associated with NK cell activity and modification.
• o Genomics and Cell Characterization:
• - Integration of omics data with functional and phenotypic data from NK cells (e.g., flow cytometry data, lytic activity).
• o Pipeline Development and Maintenance:
• - Implementation, optimization, and execution of efficient and reproducible workflows (pipelines) for the analysis of large volumes of biological data.
• o Scientific Collaboration and Communication:
• - Bioinformatics consulting for the research team on experimental design, interpretation of results, and hypothesis validation.
• - Presentations and active contribution to the writing of scientific publications.
• - B. Secondary Tasks (Experimental Support and Collaboration)
• o Laboratory Support (laboratory bench): Occasional collaboration in laboratory tasks related to the preparation and quality control of samples for NGS (e.g., RNA/DNA extraction and quantification, PCR, etc.).
• o Data Management: Organization, storage, and curation of raw and processed project data, ensuring traceability and compliance with FAIR standards.
• - Designing research projects, supervising execution and production.
• - Managing the team, assigning tasks and fostering collaboration.
• - Managing the group's resources and disseminating knowledge, applying for funding and participating in publications and conferences.

Specific Requirements

• - Academic Qualifications: PhD in Bioinformatics, Biology, Biotechnology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Computer Science, or any field related to Health Sciences or Experimental Sciences.
• - Experience and Knowledge: Demonstrable knowledge (advanced/expert level) in Bioinformatics and omics data analysis.
• - Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in programming languages essential for data analysis (such as R and/or Python).

Eligibility criteria

Specific Technical Experience in Bioinformatics (Maximum Score) (0-60)

o High-throughput sequencing data analysis: Demonstrable experience in the processing, analysis, and interpretation of massive sequencing data (NGS), especially RNA-seq (transcriptomics), single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq), or ATAC-seq. (0-30)

o Pipeline management and development: Experience in using workflow management systems (such as Nextflow or Snakemake) and working in high-performance computing (HPC) environments. (0-10)

o Knowledge of biological databases: Management of reference databases (e.g., GEO, TCGA, ENCODE, genomic and transcriptomic annotation tools). (0-10)

o Advanced biostatistics: Solid knowledge of statistical methods applied to large biological datasets. (0-10)

Thematic and Laboratory Experience (Knowledge of the Area) (0-15)

o Immunology and Cancer: Previous experience in research projects related to Immunology, Immunotherapy, and/or Oncology. (0-5)

o Experimental Work (laboratory bench): Demonstrable experience or ability to collaborate in laboratory techniques relevant to the project (e.g., flow cytometry, cell culture, NK cell purification, basic molecular biology techniques such as qPCR). (0-10)

Scientific Results and Communication (0-22.5)

o Scientific Publications: Authorship or co-authorship in indexed scientific publications (JCR) in the field of bioinformatics or related areas. (0-20)

o Level of English: High level of English (spoken and written) for scientific communication (e.g., B2 or higher). (0-2.5)

Certificate of disability of at least 33% (0-2.5).

The selection process will consist of two phases: Merit Assessment (maximum 100 points), where candidates' experience, training, and publications will be analyzed according to the evaluation criteria; and a Personal Interview (maximum 25 points). Candidates who exceed the cut-off score in the first phase will be invited to the Personal Interview. The final selection will be based on the total score.
