The emerging SABRE project, led by the OML (Optics, Materials and Lasers) team, focuses on the development and characterization of novel ultra-stable laser sources based on rare-earth ion-doped optical fibers (erbium, neodymium, or thulium) using fiber components functionalized by femtosecond photoinscription.


The project aims to develop new MOPA (Master Oscillator-Power Amplifier) ​​fiber laser sources with very narrow spectral bandwidths (<100 kHz), low noise, and optical output power in the 1-10 watt range. These sources are intended for the emerging market of quantum physics applications requiring the cooling and manipulation of cold and trapped atoms.


It is structured around two main axes:


  1. 1. The functionalization of passive and rare-earth ion-doped fibers using femtosecond photoinscription to create innovative fiber-optic devices for fully fiber-optic, single-frequency laser emission sources operating in the near-infrared (λ=850-1750 nm). The passive or rare-earth ion-doped fibers used will be supplied by the partner company EXAIL.

  2. 2. Prototyping of high-power fiber laser sources: development of prototypes of high-power, single-frequency laser sources capable of emitting at one or more wavelengths of interest for the targeted quantum applications, by integrating fiber components functionalized by photo-inscription.


This ambitious project is part of the CIMAP Laboratory's scientific strategy and strengthens the OML team's research themes around rare-earth ion-doped optical fiber lasers. The SABRE project will rely heavily on the use of the "femtosecond laser photo-inscription bench" equipment acquired by CIMAP at the end of 2023, within the framework of the SMAL2 project, phase 2 of the 2023-2024 State-Region Planning Contract (CPER) (hosted by the PNMO = Normandy Platform for Materials for Optics). This new equipment is already operational, and the first DFB fiber laser sources are already being developed by the host team.


Skills/Qualifications

Experimental manipulation on optical fibers, fabrication and characterization of fiber and/or solid lasers, photo-inscription of FBG on optical fiber by femtosecond technique, numerical modeling of guided propagation on optical fiber.


Specific Requirements

Essential knowledge of rare-earth-doped fiber laser systems and experimental mastery of optical fiber or solid-state laser manipulation for optical metrology. Experience in the field of FBG photoinscription on optical fiber and/or in the numerical modeling of lasers or guided modes in optical fibers will be an additional asset.
