Company description

• The Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute (IPSL) federates 9 laboratories whose research topics concern climate and environmental sciences from the regional to the global scale. IPSL leads and participates in several national and European projects. Applied projects aimed at facilitating climate change adaptation or mitigation policies are becoming increasingly important in the activities of the Institute.
• This position is part of the Climaviation project (https://www.climaviation.fr/en), a partnership between Sorbonne University and the French Aerospace Lab (ONERA), funded by the Direction Générale de l'Aviation Civile (DGAC). The Climaviation project aims to improve the scientific understanding of the climate impacts of aviation with the objectives to: 1) better quantify the climatic impacts of aviation, in particular the non-CO2 impacts of contrails, aerosol cloud interactions and atmospheric chemistry, 2) evaluate the impacts linked to new fuels such as synthetic hydrocarbons or hydrogen, 3) propose solutions to minimise these climate impacts.
• Location: Office at the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute (IPSL) on the Pierre-et-Marie-Curie (Jussieu) campus of Sorbonne University in Paris. Work meetings will take place in Palaiseau (ONERA), Saclay (LSCE) and Toulouse.

job description

• Mission: The researcher will automate and improve a method for quantifying and monitoring the evolution of the radiative forcing of contrails and induced cirrus clouds using geostationary satellite imagery inversion products. This activity may be based on Machine Learning techniques.
• Main activities:
1. Apply the Wang et al. method (2025 https://doi.org/10.1029/2024GL108452) to large groups of contrails, refining the uncertainty analysis.
2. Design and test new methods for separating contrail cirrus from natural cirrus in satellite data.
3. Present the results and write the scientific articles associated with these developments and the results obtained.
• Line management responsibilities: NO

Qualifications

• Engineering degree/doctorate in atmospheric or climate sciences or related field
• First experience of quantitative analysis of satellite data
• Solid experience of a programming language (e.g. Python, Matlab, C or Fortran) and scientific libraries
• Basic knowledge of Unix / Linux and bash programming
• Knowledge of atmospheric physics
• Know-how: Use of radiative transfer codes
• Cross-cutting skills: Excellent ability to write scientific articles in English; Good oral communication; Ability to plan one's work
• Personal skills: Scientific rigour; Initiative-taking and adaptability; Excellent autonomy compatible with partly remote supervision; Ability to work with teams with varied expertise

Benefits

• Type of contract: 12 to 16 month fixed-term contract, between the starting date and April 2027 included
• Gross monthly salary: Starting at 36k€ gross, according to experience
• Desired start date: As soon as possible
