Call Reference: “REVALGAE_PhD_2025”

A call is hereby open for the award of one (1) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, within the scope of the REVALGAE Project (Reference: EAPA_0130/2024), funded by the Interreg Atlantic Programme, to be carried out at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of NOVA University of Lisbon (NOVA FCT), under the following conditions:

Mandatory Admission Requirements

To be considered eligible, applicants must cumulatively meet the following requirements:

• • Hold a PhD degree in Chemistry or in a related scientific field, obtained within the three years prior to the application deadline, and awarded by an institution other than the host institution of the fellowship.

Applicants who obtained their doctoral degree abroad must provide proof of recognition of the degree in Portugal, in accordance with Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August. Supporting documents must be submitted no later than the fellowship contracting stage and may, until that moment, be replaced by a declaration on honour, using the template included at the end of this Call.

• • Demonstrate proven laboratory experience in the preparation and characterisation of ionic liquids and eutectic systems.
• • Demonstrate excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken.
• • Immediate availability.

Work Plan

The fellowship holder will carry out activities related to the preparation and characterisation of ionic liquids and hydrophobic eutectic systems for the selective extraction of oils from processed macroalgal biomass samples. This includes the use of sustainable chemical synthesis processes, purification methods, and characterisation techniques, namely spectroscopic methods (NMR, FTIR-ATR), among others. The optimisation of the characterisation of purified oil samples following isolation from collected extracts will also be undertaken.

Place of Work

The work will be carried out at the Department of Chemistry of NOVA FCT, under the scientific supervision of Professor Luís Branco, PhD.

Duration of the Fellowship

The fellowship will have an initial duration of 18 months, with an expected start date in February 2026, and may be renewed up to the maximum legal limit of 36 months applicable to postdoctoral research fellowships, in accordance with the NOVA Research Fellowship Regulations and within the duration of the project.

Monthly Maintenance Allowance

The fellowship corresponds to a monthly allowance of €1,851.00, in accordance with the current table of values approved by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (FCT) for Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. Payment will be made monthly by bank transfer.

Selection Methods and Evaluation Criteria

The selection procedure will take place in two phases. Only applicants who meet the mandatory admission requirements defined in this Call will be considered.

Documentary Evaluation (Curricular Assessment)
Applications will be evaluated on a scale of 0 to 20 points, based on the following criteria and weightings:

• • Assessment of relevant laboratory experience related to the project – 50%;
• • Scientific output, namely publications and conference communications – 40%;
• • Motivation letter, assessing the adequacy of the applicant’s profile to the objectives of the project – 10%.

Only applicants who obtain a score of 15 points or higher (75%) will be admitted to the subsequent phase.

Interview (when applicable)
An interview may be conducted if deemed necessary by the selection panel. When applicable, the final score will correspond to the weighted average of both components:

• • Documentary evaluation – 50%;
• • Interview – 50%.

If no interview is conducted, the final classification will correspond to the documentary evaluation score.

Tie-breaking Criteria

In the event of a tie in the final ranking, the selection panel may apply the following criteria successively:

• • Greater adequacy of laboratory experience to the project’s work plan;
• • Higher relevant scientific output in the project area;
• • Evaluation of the motivation letter.
