Summary of Post

The SYNERG-IE Programme is an ambitious five-year programme supported by a €2.5m Applied Programme Grant (APRO) award from the Health Research Board in Ireland. Projects funded under this programme are designed to have an impact on the health and social care of individuals, population health, and the health system in Ireland and beyond.

SYNERG-IE is a multidisciplinary research programme designed in partnership with Sjögren’s Ireland that aims to address longstanding challenges in the recognition, diagnosis, and management of Sjögren's (pronounced ‘show-grins’). Sjögren’s is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting approximately 1 in 200 people that is associated with significant morbidity affecting quality of life. Although relatively common, its complexity means that early signs and symptoms are often missed, leading to delays in diagnosis of ten years or longer for many people.

This programme will adopt a collaborative and inclusive approach, combining the skills of multidisciplinary researchers, the insights of patients, and the needs of healthcare professionals and policymakers to bring about transformative change in Sjögren's care and research. Through involving people living with Sjögren’s and healthcare professionals, the research will reflect the real-world experiences of Sjögren’s and the findings will have maximum impact, leading to tangible improvements in care.

The SYNERG-IE Programme aims to make a difference to the lives of people affected by Sjögren's in many ways. By optimising prescribing practices and medicines use, people will experience more personalised and effective treatments. Co-design approaches will be used to develop improved care pathways to enhance care experiences. National guidance and policies will provide a clear framework for care, reducing the current delays in diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, the increased knowledge stemming from undergraduate and postgraduate education initiatives will improve awareness.

This role may suit an experienced research programme manager or a research fellow who wishes to move into a programme manager role while retaining some research-focused activity. The successful candidate would be supported to pursue career development opportunities based on their own goals, e.g. teaching, grant applications, training opportunities where appropriate with prior agreement.

Specifically, the duties of the post are:

  • Day to day management and delivery of the programme as guided by the programme leadership team.
  • Leadership of specific aspects of the research programme that align with the candidate’s experience.
  • Carrying out management and administrative work associated with the programme including budget management and grant reporting.
  • Convening meetings of the programme executive, leadership team, and steering committees.
  • Providing ongoing line management, support, feedback, and guidance to other team members as required.
  • Representing the SYNERG-IE programme at national and international conferences and events.
  • Engaging with knowledge users, policymakers, professional organisations, and other stakeholders to advance SYNERG-IE’s impact.
  • Coordinating the planning, delivery, execution and review of annual multi-stakeholder events.
  • Convening and liaising positively with members of the PPI Panel and Sjögren’s Ireland
  • Managing team compliance with all funder and institutional requirements re training, data management, and reporting requirements.
  • Complying with statutory legislation and School rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety.
  • Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time.
  • Undertaking other duties and responsibilities as may be determined by the PI from time to time.
  • Representing the best interests of the Programme/School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences/University at all times.

The additional duties listed below are indicative, and would be tailored to match the successful applicants’ expertise/background.

  • Disseminating findings to relevant research stakeholders (including academic papers, conference presentations, traditional/social media etc.).
  • Engaging in the broader research and scholarly activities of the research group and participation in internal/external networks where appropriate.
  • Supervising/providing day-to-day advice, support, mentoring, and assistance to postdoctoral researchers, research students, undergraduate students, and other junior members associated with the programme/group.
  • Other tasks which would align with the successful applicant's development and career goals.

Qualifications – (Essential):

  • PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. population health, health services research, social sciences, education, human-centred design, service design, PPI, etc.) and/or significant previous experience as a programme manager.

Knowledge & Experience – (Essential):

  • Excellent qualitative and/or quantitative research skills
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with the ability to prioritise activities and meet deadlines
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to tailor to different audiences
