Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages, University of Warsaw invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (F/M) (teaching academics) at the Institute of Iberian and Ibero-American Studies[1]

Basic responsibilities and obligations:

Expectations for the candidate appointed as a result of the competitive selection process:

• • teaching practical Spanish language classes;
• • providing glottodidactic support for the teaching module;
• • carrying out organizational duties required of academic teachers;
• • engaging in efforts to improve teaching standards at the university, including:
• • acquiring knowledge in the field of education (teaching and organization of the teaching/learning process);
• • collaborating with other lecturers using acquired skills and knowledge;
• • initiating activities aimed at developing methods to enhance the attractiveness and effectiveness of the teaching process.

Conditions for entering the competition[2]

• • fulfilment of the requirements set out in Article 113 of the Law on Higher Education and Science (Journal of Laws of 2024, item 1571, consolidated text);
• • possession of a PhD in the field of humanities and a university degree in Spanish philology or a related field (minimum of a Master’s degree);
• • academic interest in glottodidactics;
• • ability to apply academic interests related to didactics and glottodidactics in practice;
• • proficiency in Spanish at the C2 level;
• • at least five years of documented experience in teaching practical Spanish language courses at various proficiency levels at the university level;
• • declaration that the University of Warsaw will be the primary place of employment;
• • submission of a complete set of required documents.

In addition, we expect[3]

• • presentation of a personal plan for self-education and development of didactic competences in teaching Spanish as a foreign language;
• • presentation of a lesson plan for a 15-minute sample class on a selected topic in didactics;
• • in the case of candidates whose native language is not Polish, a commitment to achieve at least B2 proficiency in Polish within two years of employment;
• • willingness to reside in the Republic of Poland for candidates living abroad at the time of application.

Criteria for the assessment of candidates in a competition:

The evaluation of candidates will be conducted in two stages, with a maximum of 100 points: 40 points in the first stage and 60 points in the second stage.

During the first stage, the Committee will carry out a preliminary evaluation of the candidates based on the submitted documents. Candidates who do not meet the formal requirements will be excluded at this stage.

Based on the application materials, a preliminary assessment of the candidate’s achievements will be made, from 1 to 40 points according to the following criteria:

1) assessment of educational background (0-5 points);

2) assessment of the candidate’s teaching experience (0-10 points);

3) relevance of the proposed course content to the candidate’s profile and the expectations of the position (0-10 points);

4) participation in completed training sessions, workshops, and teaching courses (0-5 points);

5) evaluation of the candidate’s personal plan for self-education and development of didactic competences (0-5 points);

6) other academic or professional achievements (e.g. publications, conference participation related to didactics or glottodidactics) (0-5 points).

The second stage consists of an interview, preceded by a 15-minute demonstration lesson. Candidates who score a minimum of 20 points in the first stage are admitted to the second stage. In the interview, each candidate may obtain up to 60 points. The Committee is guided by the following criteria:

1) discussion of previous teaching achievements, the variety of teaching formats and topics, and the methods employed (0-15 points);

2) demonstration lesson (15 minutes) on a selected topic in the didactics of the Spanish language, prepared according to an outline submitted to the Committee (0-20 points);

3) presentation of proposed projects involving student engagement (e.g. extracurricular activities, student-led initiatives) (0-10 points);

4) discussion of teaching and professional development plans in areas relevant to the candidate’s prospective duties, including awareness of key challenges and issues in higher education and an accurate understanding of its specific nature (0-15 points).

The final score awarded to each candidate by each member of the selection Committee is the sum of the points obtained in stages I and II. According to § 5(15) of Ordinance No. 27 of the Rector of the University of Warsaw, the competition is won by the candidate who receives the highest number of points, provided that the score is not lower than 60% of the maximum number of points. In the case of a tie, the higher score in criterion 2 will be decisive.
