Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

Applications are open for one Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships, within the framework of Mechanical Design and Engineering Materials, financed by IDMEC funds, under the following conditions:

Admission Requirements:

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

1. • Training in joining dissimilar materials using the Friction Stir Welding process and experience in numerical simulations using Finite Elements;
2. • to hold a PhD degree obtained in the 3 years previously to the submission of the fellowship application;
3. • to have carried out the research work that led to the PhD degree in a different entity from the host institution of the fellowship;
4. • Not to exceed, with this fellowship contract, including the possible renovations, an accumulated period of 3 years in this type of fellowship, continuously or with interruptions;
5. • Not to have previously held a post-doctoral fellowship from IDMEC.

Workplan and the objectives to achieve:

The main objective of the work is to develop and optimize reinforced panels by combining dissimilar materials such as aluminum, steel, titanium, and reinforced thermoplastics, using innovative manufacturing technologies based on Friction Stir Welding (FSW) and Additive Manufacturing (AM). Additionally, predictive models of the mechanical behavior of these components will be developed based on Finite Element Methods (FEM) complemented by Machine Learning models.

Workplace: The work will developed at IDMEC - Institute of Mechanical Engineering, being both the Host and Contracting Entity, and under the scientific supervision of Prof. Virgínia Infante.

Duration: The research fellowship(s) will have the duration of 6 months. It’s expected to begin in March 2026 and may be eventually renewed up to the maximum of 12 months.

Monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is € 1.851,00, being the payment method by Wire Transfer.

Selection methods: The selection methods will be the following: Curriculum evaluation and individual interview, with the respective weight of 50% for the curriculum evaluation and 50% for the individual interview.

Selection minutes: Brief minutes of the jury meetings will be drawn up, indicating the names and affiliation of the jury members, the names of the excluded and admitted candidates, the criteria and respective assessment by candidate, ranking of candidates, and all decisions must have clear and sufficient grounds. The minutes must be accompanied by declarations of conflict of interest (CDI) of all members of the jury.

Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will communicated to all applicants by email.

After be notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit a formal rebuttal, by email.

Application deadline and formalization: The call is open in the period between February 06 and February 19, until 18:00, 2026.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships

It is mandatory to formalize applications with the submission of the following documents: Curriculum Vitae; academic degree certificate; motivation letter; declaration on honour that the applicant does not exceed with this contract an accumulated period of three years in this type of fellowship, continuously or with interruptions, within the technological and scientific system, and that the research work that led to the PhD degree was carried out in a different entity from the host institution of the fellowship.
