Job Title: Cameron Postdoctoral Fellow

Department: School of Population Health; Cameron Scholars Programme

Reporting to: Dr Sarah Barry, Director of Academic Programmes

Location: 118 St Stephen’s Green

Contract/Duration: Specified purpose contract, up to 11 months - 0.8 FTE

Remuneration: In line with IUA research salary scale, up to a maximum of Level 2b, point 1

About the School of Population Health

Established in 2022, the School of Population Health (SPH) builds on existing strengths at RCSI in behavioural science for population health, analytic and population health sciences. The School comprises the Department of Public Health and Epidemiology, Department of Health Psychology, Data Science Centre, Healthcare Outcomes Research Centre (HORC), Institute of Global Surgery, Cameron Scholars Programme and SPHeRE (Structured Population health, Policy and Health Services Research Education – national doctoral programme). It includes some 103 academic, research and professional staff, as well as 46 PhD scholars. Population health scientists and researchers at RCSI have an impressive, multi-year track record undertaking impactful multi-disciplinary research and collaborating with an extensive network of international and national partners.

Summary of Post

RCSI is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for a fixed period of 11 months to support the education and research work of the Cameron Scholars Programme in delivering focussed research, education, and collaboration in the dynamic environment of the School.

The Cameron Postdoctoral Fellow will work directly with School of Population Health lecturers on designated research projects encompassing, but not limited to key population health research themes (e.g. women’s health, equity and marginalised groups, digital health, nutrition and lifestyle intervention, influencing policy and practice in healthcare, epidemiological and economic modelling of chronic and neurological diseases). The candidate will join the Cameron team, which is charged with generating research funding, conducting high quality research and translating outputs for academic publications, along with delivery of the MSc in Population Health Leadership. The successful candidate will have an excellent opportunity to build their skills and experience through working with an interdisciplinary team delivering innovative research and education programmes.


Specifically, the duties of the post are:

• Contribute to delivery of innovative research projects, collaborations and the MSc in Population Health Leadership through high quality, collaborative research and education in areas pertinent to population health – with scope for contribution based on the candidate’s research and education interests

• Publish in high quality (quartile 1-2) journals contributing as co-author as appropriate

• Support the delivery of new teaching programmes, teaching modalities and modes of assessment arising

• Deliver engaging lectures and other teaching modalities, including online delivery, in areas appropriate to the needs of the School of Population Health Faculty and Cameron Programme Team

• Support module leads in module delivery, student progression and liaison between students and staff

• Support in-module and end of module assessment as required

• Liaise and collaborate with and provide support to colleagues in the RCSI Schools and across the RCSI international campus’ as required

• Undergo programmes of training and development as may be required

• Contribute to quality assurance/quality improvement and accreditation of existing modules

• Perform such other related duties as may be required.


Qualifications – (Essential):

• A PhD or equivalent in an area relevant to population health or evidence-based health

• Experience of university teaching at postgraduate or undergraduate level

• Some experience or knowledge of curriculum delivery, teaching facilitation, assessment and evaluation

• Ability to engage postgraduate students through a range of teaching modes including through online delivery formats

• Ability to adapt and innovate teaching methods to ensure students’ full understanding

• Demonstrate an interest in seeking ways and opportunities to support students towards holistic education and development

• Excellent research methods skills

• Evidence of active and developing research profile

• Peer reviewed publications in high quality journals commensurate with experience

• Strong commitment to own personal and professional development

• Effective communication style appropriate to audience and situation

• Excellent time-management skills to effectively progress across domains of responsibility

• Able to build and maintain strong working relationships – actively collaborating with colleagues

• Deadline-oriented while delivering high quality teaching and research


Knowledge & Experience – (Desirable):

• Qualification in teaching and learning in higher education

• Qualification in digital education or technology
