Postdoctoral Research Fellow position

At the Geophysical Institute and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, there is a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow position within physical oceanography. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years and is associated with the Arctic Ocean 2050 program.

About the project/work tasks:

The overturning circulation in the Nordic Seas and Arctic Ocean involves the transformation of warm Atlantic waters into cold, dense overflows. These overflow waters return to the North Atlantic and form the headwaters to the deep limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). The Arctic climate is currently transitioning to a new, warmer, seasonally ice-free climate state and recent results suggest that this could be causing a strengthening of the Arctic overturning circulation. The impacts of increased Arctic overturning on the large-scale circulation in the Atlantic are, however, not established.

The appointed postdoctoral researcher will investigate how present and future changes in the Nordic Seas and Arctic overturning circulation impact water masses and circulation in the subpolar North Atlantic. The postdoc will make use of existing observations, ocean reanalyses, and numerical models.

The postdoc position is connected to “Arctic Ocean 2050”, a major ten‑year national research program aimed at advancing our understanding of the present state and future evolution of the Arctic Ocean. The program brings together 18 Norwegian partners and combines interdisciplinary fieldwork, innovation, and cutting-edge ocean and climate modelling. As a postdoc at the Geophysical Institute at University of Bergen, you will also be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR). BCCR is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe.

Applications are invited from candidates with experience in, and interest for, ocean circulation, air-ice-sea interaction and climate dynamics, in particular in high-latitude oceans.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a degree equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) in physical oceanography, climate dynamics, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics or related fields. PhD-students may apply if defence of the PhD-thesis is completed by 1 July 2026. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • A good understanding of ocean and/or climate dynamics is a requirement.
  • Experience in statistical analysis of ocean/climate data (observations or model output) is a requirement.
  • Experience in scientific programming (e.g., Matlab, Python) is a requirement.
  • Knowledge of ocean circulation and dynamics in the Arctic Ocean and/or North Atlantic is an advantage.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrate good collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

Up to 10% of the working hours may be allocated to other career-promoting activities, such as teaching at the Geophysical Institute.

The position may be extended by up to one year (maximum 4 years in total) if the appointee is granted externally financed research stays abroad. Individuals may not be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a progress plan.

It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

We can offer:

  • a good and professionally stimulating working environment
  • position as postdoctoral fellow (code 1352 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary of NOK 657 000 upon appointment. Further increases in salary are made according to length of service in the position. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
  • enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • good welfare benefits

Your application must include:

  • a brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.
  • a detailed justification of your qualifications in relation to the listed requirements, explaining how you meet each criterion. Additionally, you should address the "advantages" mentioned above, as these will be taken into account when ranking the candidates.
  • the names and contact information for two referees. One of these should be the main advisor from the PhD programme.
  • CV
  • transcripts and diplomas. If you have not yet completed your PhD degree, please submit a statement from your institution confirming that the thesis has been submitted.
  • relevant certificates/references
  • list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list with links)

The application and appendices with certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language must be uploaded at JobbNorge.
