The ‘Functional Materials Technology’ group, led by prof. D. A. Pawlak, is responsible for development of the novel material technologies and is looking for young scientists as postdocs. This group is like a ‘materials scouting’ group developing new materials and proposing potential new research ideas and directions on a materials basis. The group develops materials according to the specific needs/properties/functionalities and applications. The research and findings of this group will be used as the groundwork by other teams at the Centre, including theory, characterization and application teams.

Skills/Qualifications

Key responsibilities:

• • Design, develop, and optimize advanced battery systems with a focus on electrochemical performance and material stability.
• • Conduct fundamental and applied battery testing experiments, including cell assembly, electrochemical characterization (e.g., cycling performance, rate capability, EIS), and post-mortem analysis.
• • Lead experimental activities related to battery material evaluation, particularly anode materials, including hard carbon and other next-generation electrode materials.
• • Analyze and interpret experimental data, prepare technical reports, and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
• • Collaborate with international research partners, including coordination of sample testing and evaluation when required.
• • Contribute to the development of innovative battery chemistries, including lithium-ion, sodium-ion, or other emerging energy storage technologies.
• • Support grant writing activities and contribute to project management and reporting.
• • Ensure laboratory safety compliance and maintain high standards of research integrity and documentation.
• • Disseminating results to the public and scientific communities

Specific Requirements

Profile of candidates/requirements:

• • Applicants must have a PhD degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with a strong focus on electrochemistry or energy storage systems received no later than five years prior to the date of application
• • Demonstrated expertise in battery systems, including hands-on experience with cell assembly and electrochemical testing (e.g., galvanostatic cycling, CV, EIS).
• • Strong background in electrode materials research, particularly anode materials such as hard carbon or other carbon-based materials (experience with cathode materials is an advantage).
• • Familiarity with lithium-ion and/or sodium-ion battery technologies; knowledge of next-generation chemistries is considered a strong asset.
• • Ability to independently analyze and interpret electrochemical and materials data.
• • Experience in scientific writing and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
• • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international research environment.
• • Outstanding research achievements reflected by the publication record and other relevant activities
• • Strong organization abilities, creativity, motivation and communication skills in English are highly required, reflected by the record of conference presentations on important international scientific events
