RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

In the scope of the T&R Unit C-MADE (UID/04082/2025)

(Reference: CMADE-BI-01-2026)

 

A call is open for the allocation of 1 (one) research fellowship for a PhD holder (BIPD) within of the Research Unit C-MADE – Centre of Materials and Civil Engineering for Sustainability, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), taking place at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), under the following conditions:

 

1. Research field 

Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering or related scientific fields.

 

2. Objectives: 

The research fellowship aims to contribute to the development of sustainable construction materials with a low carbon footprint, focusing on the valorisation of industrial residues and the development of technologies for CO2 capture and mineralisation in construction materials.

 

The research will support the development of innovative construction solutions aligned with circular economy principles, decarbonisation of the construction sector, and sustainable material design.

 

3. Requirements for admission and hiring:

  • • Hold a PhD degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering or related fields.
  • • Experience in research related to sustainable construction materials or cementitious materials.
  • • Experience in experimental research and materials characterisation.
  • • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • • Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary research teams.

The following requirements must also be cumulatively verified:

- Doctor degree granted in the three years prior to the date of the application submission;

- Post-doctoral research (BIPD) in an organic unit different from the one where the R&D activities that led to the attribution of the doctoral degree were carried out;

- The fellowship holder doesn’t exceed, with the fellowship contract in question, including any renewals, an accumulated period of 3 years in this type of fellowship, followed or interpolated.

 

If a foreign higher education institution is awarded the academic degree required for this application, it must comply with Decree-Law 66/2018, of 16 August, and Ministerial Order No. 33/2019, of 25 January. The presentation of a recognised degree certificate is mandatory for signing the contract. 4. Work plan: 

The fellow will engage in research and development activities, including:

  • • Literature review and state-of-the-art analysis of accelerated carbonation formulations and industrial waste utilisation.
  • • Definition and selection of raw materials, additives, and wastes for incorporation into formulations.
  • • Study of accelerated carbonation reaction conditions (pressure, temperature, humidity, pH, CO₂ flow rate).
  • • Experimental development and optimisation of innovative formulations with high CO₂ capture and adequate mechanical performance.
  • • Physical, mechanical, thermal, and durability characterisation of the developed formulations.
  • • Contribution to the production and testing of structural and non-structural prototypes.
  • • Preparation of scientific papers, technical reports, and dissemination at scientific and technical events.

5. Applicable legislation and regulations: 

Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current wording (amended by Decree-Law No. 123/2019, of 28 August); 

 

Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships of the Foundation for Science and Technology (Regulation No. 950/2019) published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, No. 241, 16 December 2019; 

 

Regulation for Research Fellowships of the University of Beira Interior - RBIUBI (Regulation No. 100/2020) published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, n.º 27, 7 February 2020.

 

6. Work location

The work will be conducted at the laboratories of R&D Unit C-MADE – Centre of Materials and Civil Engineering for Sustainability (UIDP/04082/2025), University of Beira Interior, under the scientific supervision of Professor João Paulo de Castro Gomes.

 

7. Fellowship duration and conditions: 

The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, with an expected starting date in June 2026. The fellowship contract may be renewed for additional periods of 6 months; however, it may not exceed the maximum duration of 36 months nor extend beyond the end date of the Programme Contract. Nevertheless, should the Programme Contract be extended or renewed, the fellowship period may also be extended, up to a maximum of three years (36 months).

8. Benefits: 

A monthly maintenance allowance of €1,851.00 will be awarded, according to Annex I of RBIUBI and the values defined in the FCT fellowship table currently in force for research activities carried out by PhD holders in Portugal (FCT):

The fellowship holder will have personal accident insurance and may choose to be covered by voluntary social insurance. These costs will be added to the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance.

9. Eligibility criteria: 

Applicants will be assessed according to the following criteria, rated on a scale from 0 to 20: 

A - Motivation letter, 10%; 

B - Curricular Assessment, 40%

 C - Interview, 50%.

 

The final classification will be calculated through the weighted average of the parameters using the equation:

Final Classification = (0.1 x A) + (0.4 x B) + (0.5 x C)

The Jury will prepare a final ranking list. 

The proposal for the final classification and ordering of the candidates will constitute a reserve selection list for three months after the publication of the final ordering list. (Note: the existence of the reserve selection list enables the hiring of the candidate ranked immediately next in case the contracted scholarship holder cancels the scholarship early.)

Candidates whose final classification is lower than fourteen (14) points on a scale from 0 to 20 will not be eligible for the fellowship.

 

Important notice for candidates with diplomas issued by foreign educational institutions:

Candidates with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions can apply and will be evaluated with the same criteria as candidates issued by Portuguese institutions, provided that they have, in the application, a declaration of honour by the candidate proving the ownership of academic degrees, according to the UBI’s own draft, available on the electronic site:

Candidates holding foreign diplomas who fail to provide proof of conversion to the Portuguese classification scale will be assessed with the minimum score (10 points on a scale from 0 to 20) in Criterion B.

In any case, scholarship contracts with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be concluded after proof of recognition of academic degrees and conversion of final classification is presented, as indicated above.

13. Publication/Notification of results

The final results of the evaluation process will be published in a ranked list according to the final classification obtained and posted in a visible and public place of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior. 

The candidate(s) will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

14. Appeals and complaints: 

After communication of the provisional lists of the results in the different phases of the selection process (Admission and Exclusion, Curricular Evaluation and Interview), the candidates have 10 working days to pronounce their disagreement, under the terms of Article 121 of the Portuguese Administrative Procedure (Código do Procedimento Administrativo). 

If any allegations are presented, the final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties. 

After the statutory deadline of 10 working days, the proposal for the final classification and ranking of the candidates becomes definitive.
