1 – Title

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BIPD)

2 – Offer description

As per the terms laid down in Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação da FCT (FCT Studentships Regulations), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18 August, as it stands, we announce the launching of a call for awarding a postdoctoral research fellowship (BIPD) in the scope of the research project DEEPVIEW – Coastal depth estimation platform and virtual environment.

3 – Financing source

The Grant will be funded within the scope of the research project “DEEPVIEW – Coastal depth estimation platform and virtual environment”, project n. 2023.16569.ICDT. The project is subsidised 100% by the State Budget of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.

4 – Scientific area

Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Naval and Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geospatial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Marine Sciences, Geophysical Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, or related scientific fields.

5 – Duration

The Grant shall be awarded for a 1-year period, with the possibility of yearly renewal up to a maximum of 30 months.

6 – Activity Regime

All the work shall be developed on an exclusive dedication regime, as per the provisions laid down in the Statute of the Research Fellow, approved by Law no. 40/2004, 18 August, as it stands, and in FCT Regulation for Fellowships, available on LNEC website.

7 – Workplan and objectives

The DEEPVIEW project aims to develop a new wave-based Satellite-Derived Bathymetry (SDB) algorithm that will be publicly accessible through the Google Earth Engine cloud platform, featuring a user-friendly web interface.

To achieve this, the workplan to be carried out by the postdoctoral researcher includes:

  • Evaluation of optimal pre-processing techniques for preparing satellite images to derive bathymetry from the ocean surface imagery.
  • Developing an improved technique to derive coastal bathymetry from Satellite observations of ocean surface waves. The method relies on the wave-based inversion technique from Optical and/or SAR satellite imagery, in which the merger of two mathematical approaches (Fast Fourier Transforms and Wavelet Transforms) is proposed.
  • Testing and application of the above method to both Optical (Panchromatic and Multi-spectral) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images.
  • Implementation and integration of the developed script into the Google Earth Engine (GEE) open-access platform. This involves, among other steps, translating the core algorithm’s Python code into the GEE API syntax, by ensuring compatibility with the platform's functions and thr data structures.
  • Assistance in the selection of the demonstration case-studies and applying the method to these scenarios, to determine the algorithm’s applicability range, limitations and accuracy.
  • Preparation of reports and research papers, and participation in dissemination, outreach, and training actions (in a project Workshop).

8 – Location

Main Workplace: LNEC – National Laboratory for Civil Engineering, I.P.

Avenida do Brasil, 101 – 1700-066 Lisboa

Country: Portugal

Website: https://www.lnec.pt

Email: recrutamento@lnec.pt

The activities included within the scope of the grant will be carried out at the Estuaries and Coastal Zones Unit of the Hydraulics and Environment Department of LNEC, as well as at the Civil Engineering Department of the Higher Institute of Engineering of Porto.

Temporary trips within Portugal or abroad are planned for participation in scientific meetings and short-term internships at participating institutions or others having work relationships with the project’s team.

9 – Qualifications

Eligible candidates are:

  • Doctorates in one of the following areas: Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Naval and Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geospatial Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Marine Sciences, Geophysical Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, or scientific fields related to the above.
  • Candidates must have obtained their PhD degree within the three years prior to the date of submission of their fellowship application and may not have carried out the research work that led to that degree at LNEC.

Candidates must be fluent in Portuguese or English. In the first case, they shall also have a good knowledge of English.

10 – Scientific supervision

The activities will be supervised at LNEC by the Assistant Researcher Alberto Carlos Azevedo, from the Estuaries and Coastal Zones Unit (NEC). The scholarship holder will also be co-supervised by Professor Tiago André Abreu, from the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto.

11 – Monthly allowance

The Grant shall include a monthly allowance in the amount of 1,851.00 €. The Grant fellow shall also be entitled to a specific social security system and to insurance against personal accidents at work.

When traveling abroad (if applicable), the scholarship holder will have paid travel and accommodation expenses .

12 – Selection methods and criteria

The evaluation of the applications shall be based on the Applicant’s Merits (MC), and the following evaluation criteria shall be scored on a 0 to 20 scale.

Applicant’s merits:

  • Academic Background (PA) – scores of the academic degrees required by this call, namely Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), MSc and PhD – 30%
  • Professional Résumé (CP) – reflecting the candidate's scientific and professional career, particularly during and after their doctorate. The Professional CV highlights the candidate's knowledge and experience in the subject area of the DEEPVIEW research project – 50%
  • Interview with the selection jury (ES) – 20%

Hence:

MC = (0.3* PA) + (0.5 * CP) + (0.2 * ES).

The jury is entitled to decide not to award the Grant if the quality of the applicants is deemed below par.

13 – Selection jury

President:

– Francisco Eduardo da Ponte Sancho, Senior Researcher, LNEC

Members:

– Tiago André Abreu, Coordinator Professor, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto

– Alberto Carlos Azevedo, Assistant Researcher, LNEC

Alternates:
