The university of Bordeaux is a great dynamic and responsible university that cares about the well-being of its staff. Joining us means working in a privileged environment within a particularly diverse and open professional community, benefiting from welcome and inclusion schemes, training and internal mobility. It means participating in an academic, scientific and human adventure. It means committing to meeting the challenges of the 21st century.

Join the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Bordeaux (LAB)! The LAB is a joint research unit under the supervision of the University of Bordeaux and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. The LAB is part of the Observatoire Aquitain des Sciences de l'Univers (OASU) as a single component dedicated to astronomy and astrophysics. LAB research explores the question of origins through a continuum of themes: physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium, populations of stars in the Galaxy, formation of stars and planetary systems, atmosphere and surface of planets, habitability and the search for life, etc.

As part of the Jupiter polar Atmosphere & Fate of aerosols – JAFAR project, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), we are recruiting a Post-Doctoral Researcher in planetologyW/M.

This project aims to study the chemistry and aerosol formation in the polar atmosphere of Jupiter, a region dominated by auroral electronic precipitations.

Main activities:

We seek to understand how the magnetospheric electrons that precipitate in the auroral regions of Jupiter alter the atmospheric chemistry of these regions.

The LAB is involved in the "modeling" and "observations" Work Packages.

Your mission will be more specifically part of the "modeling" WP, which is jointly led by the Marseille and Bordeaux Astrophysics Laboratories.

Within the Atmospheres and Planetary Surfaces (ASP) team and under the scientific responsibility of Thibault CAVALIÉ, you will be required to model the electron transport and photochemistry of Jupiter’s atmosphere and to compare the results with the observations that we will obtain as part of the "observations" WP. You will contribute to scientific promotion.

# Photochemistry coupling - electron transport

  • • You complete the electron transport code TRANSPlanets to include the oxygenated and nitrogenous compounds of interest for the study.
  • • You are updating the chemical network of the photochemical code
  • • You pair the TRACKING code with the team’s photochemical code

# Impact of magnetospheric electronic precipitation on the composition of Jupiter

  • • You simulate photochemistry in and outside the auroral regions of Jupiter
  • • You compare the results to the observations
  • • You contribute to the dissemination of knowledge through presentations at project meetings and international planetary science conferences, articles in peer-reviewed journals

# Preparation of the 2D simulation of Jovian auroral photochemistry

  • • You build a reduced chemical network by following the methodology of propagation of uncertainties in kinetic constants and global sensitivity analysis
  • • You will contribute to the implementation of this reduced network in a 2D photochemical model, in collaboration with LAM partners
