- work environment: This work is part of a collaboration between LIRMM (Laboratoire d’Informatique, de Robotique et de Microélectronique de Montpellier) and LUPM (Laboratoire Univers et Particules de Montpellier). The ADVANSE (ADVanced Analytics for data SciencE) team at the LIRMM, more specifically the Visualization axis, is interested in the development of new modes of representation and/or interaction, as well as in the design of advanced exploration interfaces for end users. The LUPM is dedicated to the study of the Universe as a whole or in its smallest dimensions. Members of the Stellar Astrophysics (AS) team work on various aspects of stellar physics. They combine observations on large telescopes with numerical modeling and simulations conducted on large national and international computers. They are involved in the scientific preparation and future operation phase of ESA's PLATO mission.

The person recruited will interact with the team's researchers, engineers, doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and interns. Laboratoire d’Informatique, de Robotique et de Microélectronique de Montpellier.

- main mission: The multidisciplinary ViStellar project (AAP 2026 Blanc-01 MIPS-PTL COLORS) aims to introduce Immersive Analytics techniques through virtual reality to transform the way model grids are explored. Immersion will enable interactive (and collaborative) visual analysis, facilitate model comparison, and improve the estimation of missing parameters. This approach seeks to accelerate and support the interpretation of massive astrophysical datasets and to strengthen the synergy between modelling and observation.

- activities: 

• • Conducting a state-of-the-art review on multidimensional data visualization (Maalej et al. 2012), multiscale visualization (Solen et al. 2026), coordinated multiple views (Chen et al. 2021), progressive visualization (Ulmer et al. 2024), and Immersive Analytics (Fonnet & Prié 2019). Meetings with partners from the LUPM will allow familiarization with astrophysicists’ workflows.
• • Carrying out the different phases of visualization design and validation (Munzner 2009) to propose a prototype that meets real user needs and fosters adoption. LUPM partners will be involved throughout all stages of the process.
• • Deploying the tool and using it to perform astrophysical data analysis in the context of the PLATO mission (Rauer et al. 2024).
• • Contributing to the dissemination of results in leading international journals and conferences (IEEE VR, IEEE ISMAR, ACM VRST, IEEE VIS, IEEE TVCG, Astronomy & Astrophysics, Astroinformatics Conference Series, ADASS).
• • Participating in project management tasks (planning, technical reports, meetings with partners, etc.).

The net monthly salary is between €2,200 and €2,380

The contract duration is 18 months
