A call for applications is open for 1 Postdoctoral Research Grant (BIPD) within the scope of the IMMERSE-MPA project: Integrated Monitoring for Marine Ecological Resilience, Ecosystem Services Assessment in Marine Protected Areas [FCT- 2025.01696.MAD], under the following conditions:

I. Scientific Area: Marine Sciences, Ecology, Biology or related fields

II. Admission Requirements:

• General requirements:
a) Holder of a PhD in Marine Sciences, Ecology, Biology or related scientific fields;
b) The PhD degree must have been obtained within the three years prior to the date of application submission;
c) The postdoctoral research must be carried out at a host institution different from the institution where the research work that led to the granting of the PhD degree was developed;
d) The research activities must not require postdoctoral experience;

e) The research activities have a development and execution period equal to or less than three years;

f) The scholarship recipient does not exceed, with the signing of the scholarship contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of three years in this type of scholarship, whether consecutive or intermittent.

g) Diving certification and experience in scientific diving;

• Preferred requirements:
a) Experience in acoustic telemetry, including preparation and use of receivers for underwater acoustic telemetry, tagging of fish and invertebrates, data analysis.
b) Experience with databases and GIS applied to marine ecology, analysis of census and marine biodiversity data, movements and habitat use.
c) Experience in scientific diving, in underwater visual censuses and with the deployment and recovery of instruments and sensors in a marine context.
d) Proven scientific production, including published scientific articles, reports and other products.
e) Oral and written fluency in Portuguese and English.

III. Work plan: contribute to the execution and development of project activities, including activity planning and fieldwork, project management, report preparation, contribution to scientific articles, participation in and organization of meetings, workshops, and outreach activities. The fellow will conduct research in the area of ​​ecology and conservation, including studies of space and habitat use by recreational divers, and studies of the impact of human activities and ecosystem services associated with recreational diving in Marine Protected Areas. Specifically, the work plan includes (but is not limited to):
a) Planning and implementation of a network of marine acoustic telemetry receivers (including their maintenance and data collection) at diving sites, both inside and outside MPAs;
b) Planning a diver tracking program and holding follow-up meetings with diving centers and other relevant stakeholders;
c) Spatial analysis of space use and pressure from diving activities;
d) Conducting underwater visual censuses and capturing and tagging species with acoustic transmitters.

e) Compilation and spatial analysis of biodiversity data, environmental conditions, and human pressure.
f) Integrated analysis of habitat data, biodiversity, abundance and frequency of fish and other conspicuous species, and their relationship with various factors.
g) Organization of meetings, workshops, and dissemination activities with authorities, diving operators, and other stakeholders.
h) Management of project activities, preparation of reports, and contribution to the production of scientific articles.
IV. Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Grant Holder Statute, in its current wording; University of Madeira Research Grant Regulations; FCT, I.P. Research Grant Regulations in its current wording.
V. Workplace: The work will be carried out at the MARE regional research unit, Madeira Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Madeira, under the scientific supervision of Dr. João Gama Monteiro.
VI. Duration of the grant(s): The grant will have an initial duration of 12 months. The scholarship contract may be renewed for a maximum of 34 months or until the end of the project.
VII. Monthly maintenance allowance: The scholarship amount corresponds to €1901.00, according to the table of values ​​for scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores).
VIII. Selection methods: The selection methods will be applied in the evaluation and classification of candidates:
• Academic background and suitability of the doctorate to the scholarship area: 20%
• Experience in acoustic telemetry, including preparation and use of receivers for underwater acoustic telemetry, tagging of fish and invertebrates, data analysis: 20%
• Experience with databases and GIS applied to marine ecology, analysis of • Data from censuses and marine biodiversity, movements and habitat use: 20%
• Experience in scientific diving, underwater visual censuses and with the deployment and recovery of instruments and sensors in a marine context: 20%
• Proven scientific production, including published scientific articles, reports and other products: 15%
• Oral and written fluency in Portuguese and English: 5%
If necessary, the jury may resort to interviewing the candidates, which will be counted in the selection according to the formula: 70% Curriculum Evaluation + 30% Interview.

Candidates who have obtained a score lower than 50% in one of the selection methods will be excluded from the competition, and the following method, if applicable, will not be applied to them. Candidates who, duly notified, do not attend the Interview (if any) or who, at any stage, withdraw from the procedure will also be excluded.

X. Method of publication/notification of results:
The admission lists, as well as the results of each selection method and final ranking lists, will be published on the website of the Human Resources Unit – Scholarship Holders' Center of the University of Madeira, http://urh.uma.pt/, and the candidate will be notified by email.

XI. Application deadline and method of submission:
a) Applications may be submitted within 10 working days following the publication of the Notice;

b) Applications must be formalized by sending an application letter accompanied by the following documents: Letter of motivation, Curriculum Vitae, qualification certificate.
