Project Refº:  2024.17157.PEX
Ref. ª: CCMAR/BPD/08/2026

The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) opens one (01) vacancy for a postdoctoral fellowship (BPD) in the scientific area of Biochemistry, Global Changes and Paleoclimatology or related area, eligible to candidates of any nationality, including stateless persons and beneficiaries of the political refugee status, within the scope of the research project 2024.17157.PEX, designated by HotClim – “Variações do hidroclima, vegetação e incêndios em períodos quentes do passado: Um alerta para o futuro?” funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, under the following conditions:

1.Host and Contracting Institution: CCMAR

2.Work Plan, Tasks and Objectives:
The HotClim project aims to improve our understanding of hydroclimate variability and environmental responses during past warm climate states through the integration of terrestrial and marine proxy records from the Iberian Margin. By combining reconstructions of vegetation, fire activity, sea surface temperature and climate dynamics, the project seeks to identify the mechanisms controlling regional hydroclimate variability and its links with large-scale climate forcing. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to all scientific tasks of the project, participating in the generation, integration and interpretation of paleoclimate datasets, with a particular focus on sea surface temperature reconstructions and the identification of hydroclimate variability and forcing mechanisms.
Task 1. Reconstruction of Vegetation and Climate Changes
a. Contribute to the interpretation and integration of vegetation and climate records generated from terrestrial proxy data;
b. Participate in the compilation and analysis of datasets relevant for understanding land-atmosphere interactions during past warm climate intervals.

Task 2. Reconstruction of Fire Activity
a. Contribute to the interpretation of fire activity records and their relationship with climate and vegetation variability.
b. Integrate fire reconstructions with other environmental indicators generated within the project.

Task 3. Reconstruction of Sea Surface Temperature Conditions
a. Preparation and processing of marine sediment samples for biomarker analyses;
b. Extraction, purification and quantification of organic biomarkers using established laboratory protocols;
c. Generation of high-resolution SST reconstructions based on alkenone paleothermometry and other relevant geochemical proxies;
d. Processing, quality control and interpretation of SST datasets.

Task 4. Identification of Hydroclimate Variability and Forcing Mechanisms
a. Integration of terrestrial and marine proxy records generated within the project;
b. Compilation and harmonization of paleoclimate datasets from HotClim and complementary regional and global records;
c. Application of statistical and time-series analyses to identify climatic variability, transitions, periodicities and forcing mechanisms;
d. Investigation of the links between SST variability, hydroclimate changes, vegetation dynamics and fire activity;
e. Development of a comprehensive synthesis of ocean-atmosphere-land interactions during the studied intervals.

Task 5. Dissemination of Project Findings and Outreach
a. Preparation of scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed international journals;
b. Presentation of results at national and international scientific meetings;
c. Contribution to project reports, deliverables and public data repositories;
d. Participation in outreach and science communication activities, including seminars, workshops, public engagement events and educational initiatives promoted by the project.

Expected Outputs:
The work developed under this fellowship is expected to contribute to:
⦁    High-quality paleoclimate datasets generated within the HotClim project;
⦁    Integrated reconstructions of vegetation, fire activity, sea surface temperature and hydroclimate variability;
⦁    Improved understanding of the mechanisms driving climate variability during past warm climate states;
⦁    Scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals;
⦁    Presentations at international conferences and scientific meetings;
⦁    Dissemination of project outcomes to the scientific community and the general public.

3.Scientific Supervisor:

4.Workplace:
The place of work is at IPMA Algés, Divisão de Geologia e Georrecursos Marinhos Av. Doutor Alfredo Magalhães Ramalho nº6, 1495-165 Algés, Portugal and other places necessary for the competition of the work plan.

5.Requirements for the application:
The Candidates must meet the following conditions:

1.    PhD certificate in Marine Sciences, Geology, or related areas, obtained in the three years prior to the date of submission of this application;
2.    Candidates who have carried out research work leading to a doctoral degree at CCMAR as host institution are not eligible;
3.    The candidates must comply with Article 3 of the CCMAR Scholarship Regulations, here. This will be confirmed in the Curriculum Vitae.

Non-compliance justifies exclusion from the procedure.

6.Evaluation Criteria:
Through the analysis of the application documents the evaluation criteria for the applications and their relative weight for ranking are as follows:

a) Academic background and curriculum vitae relevant to the scientific area (40%);
b) Previous experience in laboratory work related to sediment analysis, geochemistry or environmental sciences (30%);
c) Motivation and interest in paleoclimate research and laboratory analytical techniques (30%)

The selection committee reserves the right to contact and interview candidates if additional information or clarification of any curricular aspect is necessary. In case it takes place, the interview aims to evaluate in more detail the curricular items used to grade the candidate according to the list above.

In the event that no applicant has the necessary profile, the selection committee reserves the right to close the call without any recruitment.
