WORMSOUT PLUS (funded by BIODIVERSA+) is an international research project involving 8 Mediterranean partners (Italy, Spain, France, Slovenia, Turkey, Romania, Tunisia) that aims to mitigate the ecological, socio-economic and public health impacts of the expansion of the bearded fireworm (Hermodice carunculata). The project combines marine ecology, environmental monitoring, spatial modelling, stakeholder engagement and policy support to better understand the drivers of the species' proliferation and to develop science-based management and mitigation strategies. In this project, the MIO is leader of 2 work packages: one on species distribution modelling, and another one of Socioeconomical impacts of fireworm on human activities.

The recruited postdoctoral researcher will contribute to an interdisciplinary research programme investigating the environmental and anthropogenic factors controlling the distribution and spread of H. carunculata across the Mediterranean Sea. Working within an international consortium, the successful candidate will participate in field monitoring, ecological modelling and socio-ecological analyses, while contributing to the production of scientific knowledge supporting biodiversity conservation and evidence-based environmental management.

Under the supervision of Guillaume Marchessaux (Researcher), the postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for:

  1. 1. Field monitoring: Planning and conducting field underwater surveys to monitor Hermodice carunculata populations in France and other countries if necessary, including underwater visual censuses, benthic habitat characterization, and measurements of environmental variables such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH and sediment samplings.
  2. 2. Dataset: Processing, harmonizing and analyzing ecological and environmental datasets collected across the 8 participating countries, ensuring data quality, standardization and integration within the project database.
  3. 3. Modelling: Developing species distribution and habitat suitability models using ecological, environmental and anthropogenic variables to identify the main drivers of fireworm proliferation and predict areas at risk under present and future environmental conditions.
  4. 4. Socio-economical surveys: Designing and implementing socio-ecological surveys based on the Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) approach through questionnaires, interviews and participatory mapping with fishers, divers, recreational users and coastal stakeholders to document species occurrence, perceived social and economic impacts and invasion dynamics. For this activity, many missions will be performed along the French Mediterranean coast and Corsica, and in the countries involved in the project.
  5. 5. Statistical analysis: Performing statistical and spatial analyses by integrating ecological, environmental and socio-economic datasets using multivariate statistics, GIS and ecological modelling approaches. Analysis of data from the questionnaires and related statistical analyses tailored to this type of data.
  6. 6. Coordination: Contributing to project coordination through data management, project meetings, preparation of reports and project deliverables, collaboration with international partners, participation in consortium meetings, dissemination activities and publication of results in peer-reviewed international journals.
  7. 7. Participating in outreach activities with stakeholders and contributing to the supervision of Master students involved in the project.
  8. 8. Supervising undergraduate and Master's students involved in fieldwork, data analysis and other research activities related to the project.

The position offers the opportunity to work within a large international consortium addressing one of the emerging challenges facing Mediterranean marine ecosystems, while developing expertise in marine ecology, species distribution modelling, biodiversity monitoring and socio-ecological approaches for invasive species management.
