We are looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our team at the Atominstitut, TU Wien. The successful applicant will become part of an international collaboration between Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) on a newly funded FWF project “Intrinsic Losses in Hybrid Systems with Cryogenic Solids”.In this project, we develop and investigate a new class of hybrid quantum systems based on superconducting microwave circuits and cryogenic noble-gas crystals. By understanding and controlling microscopic loss mechanisms at the interface between superconductors and cryogenic solids, we aim to enable hybrid quantum devices with significantly improved coherence times for applications in quantum computing and quantum memories.

The PhD project combines experimental quantum physics, superconducting circuits, cryogenic engineering, and materials science. 

The successful candidate will

• • contribute to the design and fabrication of superconducting resonators;
• • design, perform, and analyze experiments on hybrid devices at millikelvin temperatures;
• • grow and characterize cryogenic noble-gas crystals;
• • investigate microscopic loss mechanisms in superconducting quantum circuits;
• • analyze experimental data and compare results with electromagnetic simulations;
• • publish research results in leading international journals and present them at international conferences.
