With over 15,000 students, a multidisciplinary academic offer comprising more than one hundred nationaldegrees, and high-quality research laboratories that earn it a place in the Shanghai ranking, Université SavoieMont Blanc is a human-scale institution that combines academic excellence and professional training, strongregional ties and broad international outreach. A member of the European UNITA alliance, the university operatesacross three campuses—Annecy, Le Bourget-du-Lac, and Jacob-Bellecombette (Chambéry)—and offers a widerange of short and long programmes (University Diplomas, University Bachelor of Technology degrees, Licences,Master’s degrees, PhDs, and Engineering degrees). These programmes are available through initial training,continuing education, work-study formats, or various accreditation pathways, both on-site and via distancelearning.

The Institut de Recherche en Gestion et Économie (IREGE) is a research unit of Université Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB). The researchers at IREGE, combining expertise in management and economics, pursue investigations around aunifying theme: “Environmental and Innovation Choices”, organised into two main interdisciplinary axes:Environment, Sustainable Consumption, Tourism (ECDT) and Innovation & Organisational Development (IDO). Theseresearch areas aim to improve our understanding of how innovative and responsible approaches are adopted atindividual, organisational, and societal levels, and to assess their impacts, particularly when driven by public policy.The EIOSE project, funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR), aligns closely with these research themesand involves both IREGE and USMB as partners.

Economics is at a turning point and the development of open science practices is necessary to improve the quality of evidence and avoid a replication crisis. Although recent evidence suggests that economists (Swanson et al., 2020) and economic journals (Fišar et al., 2024) are increasingly adopting open science practices, their effectiveness remains partial due to structural limits. On the one hand, flawed academic incentives (Balafoutas et al., 2025), scarce evidence, insufficient replication (Finger et al., 2023), practices’ heterogeneity (Arpinon, 2025), lack of precise knowledge (Arpinon & Espinosa, 2023; Arpinon & Lefebvre, 2024), and misconceptions (Chopra et al., 2024) have been identified as hindering factors. On the other hand, false quality signals, adverse effects, inefficient

tools, absence of inter-disciplinary communication, insufficient practices’ effectiveness evaluation, beliefs, and perceptions are barriers yet to be explored that can accelerate the dissemination of open science in economics.The present ANR project intends to explore and remove these barriers.

The hypothesis driving this ANR project is that the transition towards better open science practices in the field of economics is hindered by insufficient evidence on malpractices, misperceptions, and current unadapted tools. The growing records of questionable practices call for further research, better understandings, and methodological advancements. In particular, the greatest challenge is to fit current improvements to the needs of economists without imposing drastic changes or altering research quality. In turn, equipping economic researchers with better tools will relieve some of the burden off their shoulders and will allow for a smoother and quicker implementation of essential measures. Therefore, this ANR project’s objective is to accelerate the development of open science practices in economics by contributing to the accumulation of evidence on malpractices, better understanding economists’ current perceptions and needs, and facilitating open science implementation by improving on current tools and developing newer and more adapted ones.

To solve the hypothesis, EIOSE considers three inter-related angles. The first angle will test the hypothesis by investigating the presence of questionable research and publishing practices in the economics literature through empirical and theoretical contributions. Considering previous works in the field, we expect to confirm the presence of questionable research and publishing practices and aim to be the firsts to theoretically outline the mechanisms at play.

The second angle will explore economists’ perceptions, conceptions, and beliefs about available open science tools using empirical and experimental approaches. Specifically, we will run surveys and experiments with economist samples to test whether insufficient knowledge about available tools limits their scope and implementation, and whether empirical evidence matches common beliefs. We expect to find support for the presence of misperceptions, misconceptions, and an important discrepancy between economists’ beliefs and the reality.

Last, the third angle will offer newly improved open science tools. Our methodological approach will consist of upgrading and tailoring current practices to the needs of economists, developing newly improved tools, and offering a cross-disciplinary exchange space. Based on our observations and previous work, we expect that newly adapted tools will facilitate implementation and use by economists, and the exchange ground will raise awareness and boost future developments.

From a wider perspective, the objective is to improve research credibility and transparency in economics to avoid a replication crisis. The expected outcomes from the ANR will all contribute to lift scientific barriers to open science in economics, elevate research quality, and facilitate systemic implementation. This point is highly important as open science should not become a burden nor some unachievable utopia. The ANR will advance our understanding of open science while offering optimal, clear, viable, and state of the art tools.

The post-doctoral researcher will be expected to significantly contribute to EIOSE’s ongoing research projects as a co-author. This will involve, but is not limited to, constructing original databases (including the use of automated tools, e.g. webscrapping or data-mining techniques), collecting data through surveys and economic experiments, analyzing data with advanced statistical methods (i.e., econometrics), and drafting research papers. In addition, the post-doctoral position will involve training and managing research assistants, which will include overseeing and managing projects on which multiple research assistants might work. Knowledge of French is not required. The position does not come with teaching duties but teaching opportunities could be available depending on interest.
