INSA Rennes is the largest public engineering school in Brittany. It welcomes 2040 students and apprentices. More than 340 engineers, 60 masters students and 40 PhDs graduate each year. With 9 teaching departments, including 7 engineering specialities and 1 apprenticeship, and 6 research laboratories, INSA employs around 540 public-sector staff (teacher-researchers, lecturers, administrative support staff) and more than 70 part-time employees from companies.

Institut FOTON is a research unit of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), affiliated to the University of Rennes and the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Rennes. The OHM research team focuses on the development and study of the electro-optical and electronic properties of new materials, compounds and devices - mainly semiconductors - for applications in photonics and energy. The successful candidate will carry out his/her research within the OHM team of the Institut FOTON, located at INSA Rennes.

In the context of global warming, the direct conversion of solar energy into hydrogen fuel by electrolysis of water has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Hydrogen, being storable, transportable and reusable on demand, offers a promising route to sustainable energy solutions. From an environmental point of view, this near-ideal solution combines the benefits of renewable solar energy production without significant CO2 emissions. However, the viability of this solution depends on the ability to achieve a sufficiently low cost of hydrogen production (LPC), which remains a challenge for current technologies for converting solar energy into hydrogen.

In response, the NAUTILUS project, as part of the PEPR H2 programme, aims to develop a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell technology that combines the scalability and low cost of silicon (Si) with the high efficiency of III-V semiconductors. The overall aim of the project is to demonstrate, as part of a French consortium, a robust, long-life, self-sufficient PEC cell capable of operating without any external voltage applied. This cell will exploit direct bandgap III-V thin films deposited on low-cost Si substrates, achieving both high efficiency and economic feasibility. The interdisciplinary NAUTILUS consortium brings together teams from FOTON, ISCR, CINaM, C2N, ISM and IEM. These teams excel in achieving academic breakthroughs at the highest international level in physics, chemistry and engineering, while promoting innovation and industrial transfer.

The engineer will be responsible for the design and manufacture of the prototype photoelectrochemical cell (PEC). This prototype will be used to characterise and evaluate the photoelectrodes developed within the NAUTILUS consortium. The role requires a combination of skills (acquired or to be acquired) in several areas:

  • Mechanical/optical design and manufacture: Mastery of PEC cell assembly, insulation, gas extractors, photonic windows, and mechanical design software.
  • Electrochemistry and chemical engineering: Knowledge of tools and techniques such as potentiostats, gas chromatography, membranes, gas extraction, electrodes and catalysis.
  • Electro-optical characterisation: Experience in methods such as current-voltage measurements, capacitance assessment and photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (PCEE).

The engineer will benefit from the expertise of the host laboratory, which includes a dedicated team (1 technician, 1 engineer and 4 researchers) with experience in the mechanical design and manufacture of PEC cells. The engineer will also work closely with the various partners in the project and take an active part in consortium meetings.
