Post: Post-Doctoral Researcher in Bio-based Material Development - School of Food Science & Environmental Health (Fixed Term Specified Purpose Wholetime for up to 5 years with initial funding for 48 months) (Reference: 180/2025)


Location: The post will be primarily based at the TU Dublin Grangegorman campus. However, elements of the research will also be conducted at the TU Dublin Tallaght campus, and occasional research activities may take place at the Teagasc Food Research Centre (Dublin) or at other TU Dublin campuses, including Blanchardstown or Tallaght. Regular attendance at these locations may be required as part of project delivery. In addition, occasional travel for sample collection and engagement with stakeholders across various sites may also be necessary. 


Hours of Work: A 37 hour working week is in operation. 


Salary: The successful candidate will be appointed at point (01) of the Post-Doctoral Researcher Salary Scale i.e. €48,412 gross per annum. Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy. Incremental credit may apply in line with University policy.

It is anticipated that interviews for this post will take place in week beginning 26th May 2025. The interview assessment will be 40 minutes in duration.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the appropriate mix of knowledge, experience, skills, talent and abilities required for the role as outlined below and must satisfy all of the essential criteria:

 

Essential

  • PhD (completed or viva passed) in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field, focusing on biobased materials or nanocellulose/lignin production.
  • Practical experience with Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES), biomass pretreatment, and lignocellulosic fractionation.
  • Hands-on experience with power ultrasound and sub-critical fluid extraction systems.
  • Experience conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) using SimaPro for biobased processes or products.
  • Proven research profile and peer-reviewed publications in nanocellulose and/or lignin production from lignocellulosic biomass.


Candidates will be shortlisted based on their demonstration of meeting every essential criterion so are asked to clearly outline how their experience and qualifications meet the criteria.

 

Desirable

  • Proficiency in experimental design and data analysis using tools such as MATLAB, SPSS, or Origin.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrate initiative, and manage time and priorities effectively.
  • Proven collaboration ability within interdisciplinary teams, contributing to joint research outputs.
  • Strong analytical thinking, able to interpret complex datasets and troubleshoot experiments.
  • Willingness to engage in mentoring, training, and knowledge transfer activities.


Candidates may be shortlisted on the basis of none, one or more of these desirable criteria and are asked to clearly outline how their experience and qualifications meet the criteria.


Further information for Post-doctoral Researcher 

In the case of a 1st Post-doctoral Fellowship where the applicant may not have graduated yet, the successful applicant must, at the time of appointment, provide a letter from the appropriate graduate studies office confirming that the student has completed the programme including all the examination requirements and is just awaiting the formal graduation ceremony and the likely date on which that will take place.
