We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to the vibrant area of wireless communication networks with a focus on identification and control technology. The position is fixed-term of 24 months, with a start date on or before 1st November 2025.


Reliable and secure connectivity everywhere, at any time, for everybody and to everything, will be a crucial element in daily life. The sixth generation (6G) of wireless communication networks is currently being shaped in line with common principles and values such as sustainability, privacy, accessibility, openness, and inclusiveness


One of the key features of 6G will be the use of non-terrestrial networks for ubiquitous connectivity. For long-range connectivity in non-terrestrial networks, optical wireless communication (OWC) offers strong advantages in terms of very high data rates, license-free bandwidths, high security, low size, weight and power usage and lower cost.


One of the challenging research topics in long-range OWC emerges from the spatial and temporal variability of the optical communication channel. Both motion of communication terminals -such as satellites, aircraft and drones – and atmospheric effects – such as turbulence and extinction – lead to time-variant behaviour of the channel response function and the channel disturbances.


The post-doc position will have a focus on the development of a system-wide identification / control strategy which aims at increasing the performance and resilience of long-range OWC systems under time-variant conditions. This may involve the specific topics of: tracking identification of channel state parameters, online OWC system optimization, data-driven nonlinear control, adaptive and learning approaches, active and adaptive optical technologies.


The project will be done in strong collaboration with researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology, in the section Control Systems Technology.


The position would suit an application-oriented researcher with a strong control theory or engineering background.


You need to have an MSc degree in Mathematics, Physics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and have finalized or be about to finalize a PhD study in Control Theory, Control Engineering or Dynamical Systems.


Organisational skills and the initiative to perform independent research are required. You should be able to work as member of an interdisciplinary team and have the verbal and written skills to present your research clearly.


The 2-years Post-doc position is part of the research program ‘Optical Wireless Superhighways’, funded by the Dutch Research Council NWO with 15 university researchers from 5 universities and with 20 industrial users in the consortium, jointly working on solutions in which optical technology is used to design reliable and secure wireless communication links over various ranges.


The function is offered by Leiden University, but the location of research will be at TNO, High-Tech Industry unit in Delft. TNO is an independent research organisation (RTO) with a major activity in the field of Opto-Mechatronics and Optical Wireless Communication. There will be a strong research collaboration with the Control Systems Technology section of the Eindhoven University of Technology.
