This three year Post Doctoral position is part of the Breeding Waders European Innovation Partnership (EIP), funded by the NPWS, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and the European Union, under the EIP Funding programme.

In the last 50 years, Ireland’s breeding wader populations have suffered dramatic declines in population size and national breeding range. Many of these declines are so significant that the remaining breeding populations are teetering on the brink of extirpation, functional extinction, or both. Many factors have driven or contributed to these dramatic declines, but all can be considered under the umbrella of land-use change.

In response to this, the Breeding Wader EIP has been devised to implement a multi-stakeholder programme to secure existing breeding wader populations, which include Curlew, Dunlin, Lapwing, and Golden Plover among others, at key sites.

The EIP also aims to support population recovery via wider landscape management and policy development. The post doctoral researcher will be part of the EIP team with a key role in integrating research findings from the wider research support team in ATU and UCD (including 3 PhDs) into advice for the EIP.

This aims to enable coordinated, evidence based and coherent national and EU policy input from the Waders EIP. The results of this research will lead to the development of policy and science-based policy recommendations, to aid management approaches within the Irish rural landscapes which would facilitate the viability of endangered wader populations into the future.
