Member of the team of NCN OPUS28 project: Micromechanics of crystalline multi-component materials with non-standard deformation modes under non-monotonic loading conditions. The goal of the project is to understand and describe, within the framework of micromechanical crystal plasticity, the mechanical response of materials with non-standard deformation modes and exhibiting strength differential effect, such as twinning or micro-twisting, under non-monotonic loading conditions. Highly anisotropic materials, such as magnesium alloys with hexagonal closely packed crystal lattices or MAX phases, have low ductility and fracture toughness, which can be further reduced under service loading conditions. This may be due to twinning and de-twinning activity under cyclic loading or local microstructural instabilities. Understanding the effects of cyclic deformation on microstructure evolution can pave the way for the design of advanced materials and structures with improved strength, durability and reliability.
