We are seeking highly motivated and talented candidates for a 3 years-Postdoctoral Researcher position in the development of liquid-walled[1] pumps for ECMO (ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) therapy application. The starting date is 1 December 2025 latest.

The selected candidate will join the Systems Chemistry Group at IMDEA Nanociencia in Madrid, working under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Hermans and in close collaboration with clinicians from UCIP-GM (Gregorio Marañón University Hospital, Madrid).

This position is part of the project LW-ECMO – Liquid-walled circuits for anticoagulant-free extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, funded by La Caixa Health 2024, and will involve designing and prototyping next-generation low-shear blood pumps that will be clinically tested in a small animal model. (Ref: PID2022-136961NB-I00)(HR25-00225).

Main functions:

• Design, fabrication, and optimization of liquid-walled pumps (Qpump) capable of achieving clinically relevant flow rates and pressures.
• Development of mechanical and fluidic systems, including rotor–stator configurations, ferrofluid handling, and pulsatile pumping control.
• Integration of pump prototypes into in vitro blood circuits and coordination with collaborators for preclinical testing in animal models.
• Characterization of pump performance: flow, pressure, pulsatility, shear forces, and blood compatibility.
• Contribution to publications, patents, and presentations at international conferences.

REQUIREMENTS

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields.
• Strong background in fluid mechanics, pump design, or medical devices.
• Hands-on experience with CAD/CAE, prototyping, and laboratory testing.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment with chemists, clinicians, and engineers.
• Good written and spoken English.
• High self-motivation, autonomy, and strong problem-solving skills
• Willingness to learn as this is a very non-traditional project
