OFFER DESCRIPTION

A postdoctoral researcher is sought to work on a research project focused on the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the context of potable water reuse and the study of molecular reactivity.

The project (Project PID2023-149499OB-I00 (OrbiX)- Funded by MCIU/AEI /10.13039/501100011033 / and FEDER, UE) aims to investigate both known and unknown DBPs, using advanced targeted and non-targeted analysis techniques with high-resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap), as well as the reactivity of organic matter in effluents in laboratory-scale oxidation systems.

Job Responsibilities:

-Design and execution of experiments: The postdoc will be responsible for planning and conducting experiments to investigate the formation of DBPs in potable water reuse applications. This includes sample preparation and conducting laboratory oxidation experiments to study the reactivity of the organic matter present in the effluents.

-Data analysis with mass spectrometry: Utilizing high-resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap) for the identification and quantification of known DBPs and the identification of unknown compounds through targeted and non-targeted analysis techniques.

-Development of new methodologies: The postdoc will develop new methodologies for the detection of unknown DBPs and apply Orbitrap fragmentation data to predict specific reactions, with a special focus on the formation of nitrosamines (NAs).

-Interpretation of results and hypothesis formulation: Analyzing experimental data to understand the molecular mechanisms governing the formation of NAs and the reactivity of organic matter. Establishing connections between the obtained results and the previous hypotheses of the project.

-Interdisciplinary collaboration: Collaborating with principal investigators (PIs) and other team members to align experimental findings with the overall objectives of the project.

-Writing reports and scientific publications: The postdoc will be responsible for writing progress reports and preparing scientific publications detailing the project’s results. They will also participate in disseminating findings at conferences and other academic events.

-Laboratory management and student supervision: Possible supervision of master’s or doctoral students collaborating on parts of the project, as well as managing the laboratory equipment necessary for the experiments.

KEY DUTIES

The hired individual will carry out the tasks of the project, which are:

-Design and execute experiments to investigate the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in potable water reuse.

-Analyze data using high-resolution mass spectrometry (Orbitrap) to identify and quantify known and unknown DBPs.

-Develop new methodologies for the detection of DBPs and predict specific reactions, with an emphasis on the formation of nitrosamines (NAs).

-Interpret results and formulate hypotheses regarding molecular reactivity and the lability of organic matter. -Write reports and scientific publications and collaborate with the team in disseminating the results.

-Supervise students and manage the laboratory equipment necessary for the experiments.
