A Post-doctoral Research Fellowship (BIPD) (Reference ICETA 2025-01) on the project NEUROBIOTECH – “Combining New Cell-based Therapies and Biodegradable Polymers to Promote Peripheral Nerve Regeneration”, funded by FEDER funds (COMPETE 2030) and national funds by FCT/MECI, operation no. 16024, with reference COMPETE2030-FEDER-0071600, is available at ICETA.

Admission requirements:

PhD holders in the fields of Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, or related areas, who have obtained the doctoral degree within the last three years, may apply. Proven experience in cell culture, cell-based therapies, and in vitro and in vivo assays, namely in animal models applied to Regenerative Medicine, is required.

The host institution where the research work was developed that led to the attribution of the candidate's doctoral degree must be different from CCECA – Centro de Estudos em Ciência Animal.

In case the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th August, and all formalities established therein must be complied until the signature of the contract.

Workplan: The fellow will join the project NEUROBIOTECH – Combining Novel Cell Therapies and Biodegradable Polymers to Promote Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, focused on developing regenerative therapies combining biomaterials and cell-based strategies for peripheral nerve repair after injury.

The activities to be developed include:

• • In vitro evaluation of cytocompatibility and cytotoxicity of novel biomaterials, assessing the functional activity of mesenchymal stem cells in contact with innovative biomaterials;
• • Participation in conducting and monitoring in vivo studies involving animal models of different levels of complexity (rodents and sheep), applying regenerative surgery and functional assessment protocols;
• • Support in post-mortem morphological and molecular analysis;
• • Collaboration in the preparation and presentation of reports, papers, posters, and oral communications;
• • Contribution to laboratory organization and compliance with biosafety and animal welfare regulations.

Applicable Legislation: The grant is awarded under the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, approved by Law nº 40/2004, of August 18th, and updated by Law decree 123/2019, of August 28th, and the Regulation for Studentships and Fellowships of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P.: (https://files.diariodarepublica.pt/2s/2019/12/241000000/0009100105.pdf).

Work Place: The research work will be carried out at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP), particularly at the Laboratory of Veterinary Cell-based Therapies and the Veterinary Clinical and Research Centre of Vairão (CCIVV), under the scientific supervision of Dr. Rui Damásio Alvites.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will last 12 months, starting on February 2026, renewable for equal period up to a maximum of 2 years.

Monthly stipend:

Monthly stipend is €1.851 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.p…). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

Selection criteria: The selection process will be based on the following criteria:

1. 1. Curricular Evaluation (90%):
   1. 1) Scientific and academic merit (50%);
      1. • Motivation letter – 5%;
      2. • Overall scientific coherence of the CV – 15%;
      3. • Diversity and quality of scientific indicators in Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, and Regenerative Medicine – 20%;

      4. • Participation in research projects and/or student supervision – 10%.

   2. 2) Relevant and proven experience (40%)
      1. • Experience in cell culture and cell-based therapies – 15%
      2. • Experience in in vitro assays (cytocompatibility, differentiation, cellular and molecular characterization) – 15%;
      3. • Experience in in vivo assays (animal models and pre-clinical studies) – 5%;

      4. • Skills in data analysis, experimental statistics, and scientific communication – 5%.

         
         

2. 2. Additional Valuation Points (10%)

The following complementary aspects will be valued:

1. 1. Indexed and peer-reviewed publications in Biotechnology, Cell Therapies, or Regenerative Medicine;
   1. 1) Participation in national or international research projects;
   2. 2) Experience in multidisciplinary teams;
   3. 3) Contributions to scientific dissemination (articles, presentations, advanced training);
   4. 4) Fluency in written and spoken scientific English.

Interview (10%, if applicable)

If the difference between the best-ranked candidate and others is equal to or less than 10%, the jury will interview these candidates. In this situation, the final classification will result from 90% Curricular Evaluation + 10% Interview. The interview aims to clarify aspects of the candidates’ scientific background and suitability for the proposed work plan.

The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.
