International selection procedure for the recruitment of one Researcher

ADAI - Associação para o Desenvolvimento da Aerodinâmica Industrial (Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics) decided to open an international selection competition for a researcher, within the scope of project Bio-Waste2Carbon (BW2C): Captura criogénica de carbono de gases de pós-combustão de resíduos florestais, funded by the European Fund for Regional Development (FEDER), through the Operational Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization and /or the Regional Operational Program of the Center, of Portugal 2030.

1. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

- Analysis of the state of the art in combustion gas dehumidification technologies.

- Front-end project for a dehumidifier to be included in a cryogenic CO2 capture system, including: initial design, detailed modeling, and subsequent optimization phase. This task aims to accurately establish the requirements and specifications of both the cryogenic CO2 capture system and its critical components;

- Experimental development of the recommended solution. This task encompasses i) the creation of laboratory conditions that allow the energy aspects of the process to be mimicked (lab-twin), as necessary; ii) the detailed design, construction, and assembly/installation of a laboratory prototype; and iii) the parametric analysis of its operation and its extensive characterization.

2. Type and contract duration

The temporary employment contract is expected to begin in February 2026 until the end of the project. The hiring shall be performed under the Labor Code and other legislation applicable to individual labor contracts.

3. The selection Jury of the competition is composed as follows:

• Presidente – Professor Dr. João Pedro da Silva Pereira.
  • 1st member– Professor Dr. José Manuel Baranda Moreira da Silva Ribeiro.
  • 2nd member – Professor Dr Adélio Manuel Rodrigues Gaspar

4. The work will be carried out under the scientific supervision of Dr João Pedro da Silva Pereira, within the framework of the activities of the Association for the Development of Industrial Aerodynamics of the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transport and Aeronautics (ADAI-LAETA). The work sites are: i) the Industrial Aerodynamics Laboratory - LAI and ii) other sites that may be necessary to execute the work plan.

5.The monthly remuneration to be attributed is a gross value of 2351,53€. Benefits include a daily lunch subsidy of 6,00 Euros.

6. The competition is open to national, foreign, and stateless candidates who hold a master's degree in the field of Mechanical Engineering or similar. Candidates should preferably have knowledge of the forestry sector and have experience in research work involving modeling, data analysis, construction of experimental test rigs, carrying out laboratory and field tests, and a good knowledge of written and spoken English. They should also have the ability to organize tasks and identify priorities; the ability to analyze, identify, and solve problems; the ability to work with scientific, technical, and functional teams, ensuring alignment with the project's objectives; a spirit of initiative, continuous learning, and proactivity; communication skills and good interpersonal skills.

In the case of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, they must be accompanied by the respective certificates of recognition and grade conversion. Failure to submit these documents will result in a score of ‘0’ (zero) in sub-criterion AC1-academic background.

7. Eligible applications will be scored on a scale of 1 to 100 for each of the following evaluation criteria:

AC (100%) = A1 (20%) + A2 (20%) + A3 (40%) + B (20%)

• Subcriterion A1 - Academic qualifications and final grades, with a total weight of 20%;

• Subcriterion A2 - Participation in related research projects, with a total weight of 20%;

• Subcriterion A3 - Suitability of profile, demonstrated through experience in expansion systems for cooling and their numerical modeling, as well as in the development of prototypes and experimental work, with a total weight of 40%;

• Subcriterion B - Merit of the motivation letter, with a total weight of 20%;

8. Minutes of the Jury meeting, including an evaluation report, are available to the candidates whenever requested.

9. After completing the application of the selection process, the Jury proceeds to draw up the ordered list of approved candidates with the respective classification.

10. If the selected candidate is not willing to occupy the position, the Jury can decide to invite the next eligible candidate in the ordered list.

11. The final deliberation of the Jury is approved by the Board of Directors of ADAI, which is also responsible for deciding on hiring.

12. Application procedure:

a) Application to the position is formalized by sending the following information addressed to the Jury President, reference of number of this position (given at the top of this document), full name, number and date of the Citizen’s card or civil ID, tax identification number, date and place of birth, residence and contact address, including e-mail address and telephone contact.

b) The application shall be accompanied by documents proving the conditions described in points 6 and 7 for admission to this selection process, in particular:

• - Detailed curriculum vitae (CV);
• - Certificate or diploma, including a list of courses and grades
• - Motivation letter, in which the candidate should explain their knowledge of the project area
• - List of publications, including DOI (digital object identifier) link and Journal (JCR) impact factor (when applicable).
• degree recognition by a Portuguese Higher Education Institution according to the applicable legislation, for all graduations obtained abroad.

13. Candidates who incorrectly formalize their application or do not give adequate proof of the requirements of this selection process are excluded from admission to the competition. The Jury has the power to require any candidate, in case of doubt, to present documents proving his statements

14. Candidates who do not obtain a final mark equal to or greater than 50% will not be allowed to fill any of the position in tender for lack of absolute merit

15. False statements by candidates shall be punished in accordance with the law

16. Admitted and excluded candidates will be notified of their inclusion or exclusion by email. The final classification of eligible candidates will be sent to each candidate by email with notification of receipt of delivery.

17. Prior hearing and deadline for the Final Decision: After being notified, the candidates have 10 working days to comment the decision. Within a maximum of 10 days from the deadline for prior hearing, the final decisions of the Jury will be given.

18. The present selection process is exclusively intended to fill the vacancy indicated and it is terminated when the final list of candidates is approved, and the advertised position is filled

20. Under DL No. 29/2001, of February 3, a disabled candidate is given preference in the case of equal classification, which prevails over any other legal preference.
