A tender is hereby opened for the award of 1 (one) Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) in the scope of R&D projects New Routes for Anticancer Metallodrugs - Drug2Target COMPETE2030-FEDER-00672800, within the Instituto de Biomedicina da Universidade de Aveiro (IBIMED) under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Area: Biochemistry
2. Funding Source Foundation for Science and Technology/MCTES, I.P., through national funds (PIDDAC), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, through the COMPETE2030-FEDER-00672800 of Portugal 2030
3. Admission Requirements: Doctor Degree in Biochemistry
4. Other Requirements: Prior experience in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, including independent operation and contribution to equipment maintenance, particularly for metabolomic analysis of biological systems (tissues, cells, biofluids). Prior experience with advanced multivariate statistical analysis methodologies and the use of software packages such as Matlab, SIMCA, R, Chenomx, and MetaboAnalyst, as well as relevant databases. FELASA training and experience in animal experimentation, alongside experience in 2D and 3D cell culture. Specific experience with platinum and palladium metallodrugs and cancer research, supported by projects and scientific publications.
5. Eligibility: Applicants are eligible if they comply with paragraph b) of nos.1 and 2 of article 2, of the Research Fellow Statute as amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, as well as in article 7 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology. PDFs can only be granted provided the following requirements are met cumulatively:
a) The doctorate has been obtained within the three years prior to the date of submission of the application for the grant;
b) The postdoctoral research is carried out in a host entity different from the entity where the research work leading to
the doctoral degree was carried out;
c) the research activities do not require postdoctoral experience;
d) the research activities have a time frame for development and implementation of three years or less;
e) The fellow does not exceed, with the conclusion of the grant contract in question, including possible renewals, an
accumulated period of three years in that type of grant, consecutive or interpolated.
6.Work plan: The work plan, part of the Drug2Target project, aims to contribute to the development and preclinical evaluation of new platinum-, palladium-, and nickel-based anticancer metallodrugs, using metabolomics approaches based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and the integration of results with biological and pharmacological assays. The fellow will develop research activities related to the preparation and processing of biological samples, including tissues, two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) cells, and biofluids, for metabolomics analysis by NMR. They will also be responsible for the acquisition, processing, and quality control of spectroscopic data, as well as their multivariate statistical analysis and biological interpretation, using specific computational tools, namely Matlab, SIMCA, R, Chenomx, and MetaboAnalyst. Activities include participation in in vitro and in vivo studies aimed at evaluating the therapeutic efficacy, toxicity, and mechanisms of action of new metal compounds. The fellow will contribute to the integration of metabolic data with results obtained through other cellular and molecular biology methodologies, allowing the identification of metabolic biomarkers, altered metabolic pathways, and potential therapeutic targets associated with the response to new antitumor agents. Participation is also expected in the implementation and optimization of experimental methodologies, the integrated processing and interpretation of results, the preparation of technical-scientific reports, the preparation of manuscripts for publication in international scientific journals, and the presentation of results at project meetings and national and international conferences. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the project, the scholarship recipient is expected to have advanced training in Biochemistry and experience in NMR metabolomics, multivariate statistical analysis, cell cultures and in vivo experimental models, also valuing knowledge in bioinformatics, molecular biology and integration of omics data. The ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, autonomy in the execution of experimental protocols, critical thinking in the analysis of results, and aptitude for written and oral scientific communication are also expected. The results of this work plan should contribute to deepening the knowledge of the metabolic mechanisms associated with the action of new anticancer metallodrugs and to the development of innovative, more effective and less toxic therapeutic strategies, in line with the scientific objectives of the Drug2Target project.
7. Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute of Scientific Research Grant Holder, as amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th; Regulation no. 950/2019, of November 29th, published in Diário da República, no. 241, Series II, of December 16th (FCT, I.P. Research Grants Regulation); Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).
8. Workplace: The work will be carried out at Instituto de Biomedicina da Universidade de Aveiro (IBIMED) of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Professor/Doctor Luisa Alejandra Helguero.
9. Duration of the grant(s): The grant duration will be 12 months, starting in September 2026, and may be renewed for additional periods of 3 months up to the maximum funding approved, and may under no circumstances exceed the limits defined in the Regulations for the type of grant in question, in accordance with Article 7 of Regulation No. 950/2019, of November 29th, published in the Diário da República, No. 241, Series II, of December 16th (FCT, I.P. Research Grants
Regulation).
10.Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €1.901,00 according to the table of monthly maintenance allowance amounts set out in Annex I of Regulation no. 950/2019, subject to any updates that may be applicable, under the terms of no. 2 of article 18 of Regulation no. 950/2019, of November 29th, published in Diário da República, no. 241, Series II, of December 16th (Research Grants Regulation of FCT, I.P.). The fellow may also be reimbursed for the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Security, in case of adherence to this plan.
