i3s – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities for a PhD’s with less than 3 years of postdoctorate, within the project “CArdiovascular REsolution of INflammation to promote HEALTH”, - CARE-IN-HEALTH (HORIZON-HLTH-2022-STAYHLTH-02, Grant agreement ID: 101095413), funded by Horizon Europe.

Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.

Scientific Area: Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, or other related fields.

Project Title: “CArdiovascular REsolution of INflammation to promote HEALTH”.

Workplans:

The aim of the CARE-IN-HEALTH project is to identify the molecular profile of chronic inflammation associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases and its resolution. This project will enable the development of measures and tools with potential application in healthcare systems and by citizens to support the maintenance of health and well-being. Within this context, the project requires a candidate with experience in the development and implementation of analytical methodologies, including the functionalization and testing of biosensors, as well as the handling, processing, and analysis of clinical samples.

Admission Requirements:

Mandatory: 

- Candidates must hold a PhD degree obtained in the last three years in Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related fields, with proven experience in electrochemical sensors development and application and immediate availability to start the contract.

Preferencial: Demonstrated experience and solid knowledge in the following areas:

- Development of analytical methods, preferably involving biosensor technologies and aptamer development;

- Quantitative molecular analysis of biological samples;

- Patents and publications in international peer-reviewed journals in areas relevant to the present call are valued, as well as participation in competitive research projects in those areas;

- The candidate should demonstrate an interest in the development of molecular detection technologies, ability to work in a team, and proficiency in English (spoken and written).

The Doctorate beneficiary of this type of fellowship cannot exceed, with the conclusion of the fellowship contract, an accumulated period of three years under this type of scholarship, continuous or not continuously calculated. The calculation of the three years period considers also all the host entities to which the Doctorate has been linked to by a postdoctoral fellowship. 

 PhD holders of this type of fellowship must also have carried out the research work that led to the attribution of the PhD degree in a host institution other than i3S.

Legislation and other applicable regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statute enacted by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th, as amended; i3S Research Grants Regulation.

Place: The research activities will be hosted at i3S, under the scientific coordination of Doctor Inês Mendes Pinto.

Length time: The duration of the fellowship is 12 months, eventually renewable. The expected starting date is 1st of September of 2026, upon availability of the financed funds.

Monthly maintenance stipend: €1.901,00, according to the values table of FCT, at Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM-2026.pdf). The payments will be made by bank transference. 

Research grants may also include other components, as the voluntary social insurance, under the terms of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute, article 10. 

Evaluation Criteria: 

The selection will be carried out through curriculum evaluation (80%), taking into account prior experience in the areas described in the Admission Requirements, and a motivation letter (20%). Candidates will be evaluated on a scale from 1 to 100, followed by a ranking based on the scores obtained according to the criteria defined above.

For the purpose of clarifying and obtaining additional information regarding the submitted curricular elements, the top-ranked candidates may be invited for an interview. In this case, for all admitted candidates, the first evaluation component will account for 80% (detailed CV 70% and motivation letter 10%), and the interview will account for 20%.
