Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. At the renowned Institute of Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University, more than 30 professors and over 200 scientific staff members work on a wide range of topics from various areas of basic research and application-oriented sciences. The institute also employs around 75 technical and administrative staff members.

Your tasks:

Assuming the role of managing director of the Institute of Physics
Acting at the interface between the Institute and the University administration as well as a communicator with external institutions
Providing advisory support to the Institute's management in all strategic and administrative matters
Overseeing the management of extensive third-party and state funding, the technical and structural infrastructure of all institute facilities and actively shape and optimize administrative processes
Supervision of departments in charge of budget management and building management, as well as of various technical facilities of the Institute
Serving on committees of the Institute and the Faculty 08, in particular in the collegial management of the Institute
Willingness to participate in academic self-administration at the University level
Engaging appropriately in university teaching
Possibility to carry out research activities within the remaining time budget

Skills/Qualifications

Your profile:

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate:

A successfully completed university degree in physics or a related discipline and a corresponding doctorate in this field
After successfully completing a university degree, a full-time position of at least two years and six months as well as sufficient teaching experience
A strong sense of responsibility and excellent communication skills combined with the ability to handle sensitive data and issues with absolute discretion
Very good knowledge of both German and English
Ability to help shaping the digital transformation in administration
Professional experience at a research institution, especially in the field of academic self-administration and in the administration of technical infrastructure is desirable
Experience in financial management and personnel management is advantageous

Specific Requirements

The position is remunerated according to salary grade A 13 LBesG and to be filled by 10/1/2025 as a civil servant for life. With appropriate previous service and aptitude, and if the civil service and budgetary requirements are met, a transfer up to the salary group A15/E15 is possible.

If the legal requirements for civil servants are not (or not yet) met, employment as an academic member of staff may be possible.
