Work environment : You will work within the DEXTER team at LIRMM in collaboration with the BIOTIC/MéTICE teams at LMGC and the ENT Department of the Montpellier University Hospital. The position is embedded in a vibrant research ecosystem with access to cleanroom facilities and strong industrial links.

Main mission : Cochlear implants are the first functional implantable neuroprosthetic devices in humans, restoring auditory perception in individuals with severe to profound hearing loss. A critical step in the implantation procedure is the insertion of an electrode array (⌀1mm × L30mm) into the cochlea to stimulate the auditory nerve fibers. This project aims to develop a next-generation, robotically actuated soft electrode array carrier. The core innovation lies in the design of a flexible mechanism capable of smooth, curvature-controlled insertion to reduce trauma within the cochlea. The project addresses challenges in soft robotics, finite element modeling (FEM) of hyperelastic materials, optimization under mechanical constraints, and experimental validation at real scale.

Activities :

• Perform 3D finite element modelling of the flexible electrode holder (advanced codes and commercial software such as ANSYS).
• Develop optimization strategies and integrate actuation mechanisms (cables/tendons, fluidic systems).
• Fabricate full-scale prototypes in a cleanroom using soft-lithography processes.
• Conduct experiments and characterizations to evaluate prototype performance.
• Contribute to the scientific and technological valorisation of the project (publications, conferences, patents).
