We are looking for a postdoc to join the research team of the INASIA project led by Małgorzata Kot, PhD and funded by European Research Council (ERC).

Description of the project:
Long before modern humans were thought to have arrived in Eurasia, advanced stone tool technologies were already present in Central Asia. Recent discoveries in Uzbekistan reveal that blade assemblages resembling those of the Initial Upper Palaeolithic (IUP) date back as far as 70 ka, which is prior to what was expected. This raises a crucial question: did modern humans reach the region earlier than previously believed, or did Neanderthals or Denisovans develop similar techniques independently? The ERC-funded INASIA project seeks to answer this by studying new cave sites, using a multidisciplinary approach to uncover who made these tools, how they lived, and whether they interacted with other human species, reshaping our understanding of early human migration.

Key responsibilities:

ㆍparticipation in the preparation for and conducting fieldwork in Uzbekistan within the INASIA project;

ㆍconducting survey in mountainous areas and excavations in high-mountain caves;

ㆍcoordinating the process of exploration, flotation/sieving of sediments and sorting of materials;

ㆍkeeping and digitizing field documentation;

ㆍmanaging the system of measurement and its digitization during fieldwork;

ㆍmanaging the documentation od findings and its inventory;

ㆍanalysing spatial data obtained during fieldwork;

ㆍcreating data visualisations, predictive models and advanced data analyses based on results of analyses of different types of findings;

ㆍassisting in the visualisation of analysis results of the acquired data;

ㆍpreparing publications and presenting results;

ㆍcollaborating with other team members.

This is a half-time position for a post-doctoral researcher (R2) to be employed at the University of Warsaw for 48 months starting on 1st March 2026. Approx. annual salary: 95 454 PLN gross (including an annual bonus and seniority allowance) and a social benefits package.
