QUEERSHIP is a pioneering five-year research project (2026–2030) funded by the ERC, dedicated to studying the everyday lives, kinship practices, and support networks of LGBTIQ* families in Central and Eastern Europe. The project offers a novel theoretical and methodological approach to queer kinship that moves beyond the Anglo-American perspective dominant in queer studies.

The research covers four countries: Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, and Hungary, regions with diverse yet still limited legal and social recognition of LGBTIQ* families. The project analyzes how LGBTIQ* families build, practice, and display their relationships under dynamic and often hostile cultural and institutional norms.

QUEERSHIP employs an interdisciplinary methodological approach, integrating longitudinal ethnography, relational trajectory couple interviews, individual interviews around maps of significant others, discourse analysis, focus group interviews (FGIs), Participatory Action Research (PAR), and a quantitative survey (1,200 respondents). The project aims to develop a Multidimensional Sociocultural Model of Queer Kinships (MSMQK).

Research conducted in Poland will encompass all work packages of the project (WP1 - WP5):

  • WP1: Mapping the sociocultural and political landscape (discourse data collection and analysis of sociocultural and political trends)
  • WP2: Exploring daily lives and kinning practices through longitudinal ethnography (10 families, minimum 6 observations each)
  • WP3: Focus group interviews
  • WP4: Contribution to designing the quantitative research instrument
  • • WP5: Contribution to Developing the Multidimensional Sociocultural Model of Queer Kinships

    The person employed in this position will be responsible for conducting research and analysis in Poland within all work packages of the project (WP1–WP5), in particular:

    1. Fieldwork and data collection (WP1–WP3)

  • Collecting and analyzing data on public discourse (legal documents, social policies, media representations, publications by LGBTIQ* organizations);
  • Participation in the detailed development of research instruments for WP2-WP4;
  • Participant observation of selected events (public and semi-private) relevant to the LGBTIQ* community;
  • Conducting longitudinal ethnography of the everyday lives of approximately 10 LGBTIQ* families, including:
  • minimum 6 observations per family,
  • in-depth interviews with parents,
  • interviews with children using methods adapted to their cognitive abilities,
  • analysis of participants' diaries and interviews about them;
  • Co-organizing and participating in Participatory Action Research (PAR) workshops (validation, refinement, and integration of findings), including preparing materials, facilitation work, and integrating workshop results with project analyses
  • • Conducting focus group interviews with various groups: significant others of families, professionals working with families, and LGBTIQ* activists.

    2. Analytical and publication work (WP2–WP5)

  • Systematic analysis of qualitative data collected in Poland;
  • Collaboration in comparative analyses with research team members responsible for other countries;
  • Co-creating the Multidimensional Sociocultural Model of Queer Kinships (MSMQK);
  • Preparing at least two academic articles annually, individually or in co-authorship;
  • • Active participation in team seminars, methodological meetings, project meetings, and conferences.

    3. Organizational, reflective, and ethical tasks

  • Preparing research documentation and processing data for archiving according to project guidelines and ERC standards;
  • Representing the project at international conferences, workshops, and seminars;
