Overall Purpose of the Position

The primary purpose of this role is to lead the processing, analysis, and reporting of all sequencing data generated under the Research Ireland-funded PRISM programme. A key component of the role will be PRISM Clinical Reporting, specifically the analysis of TSO500 gene panels performed on patient tumour samples in the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, an INAB-accredited laboratory, using the Illumina NextSeq platform. Actionable targets identified will be reported back to the treating physician to support clinical decision-making.

The role also covers research-driven sequencing, including whole exome sequencing (WES), transcriptomics, and epigenetics data analysis. This position requires the development and maintenance of bioinformatics pipelines and close collaboration with clinical teams, research groups, and clinical genomics scientists appointed under the PRISM grant.

Role Requirements

Candidates should hold a PhD in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology. Experience with processing, analysis and visualisation of DNA and RNA sequencing data is essential. Candidates should be enthusiastic and willing to work on research projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists and clinicians.

Specifically, the duties of the post are:

  • • Clinical Genomics Analysis and Reporting (PRISM Clinical Reporting)
  • • Lead the bioinformatics analysis and interpretation of TSO500 gene panel data from patient tumours.
  • • Work with the Molecular Pathology Laboratory to ensure seamless data transfer, analysis, and reporting to treating physicians.
  • • Ensure compliance with INAB-accredited workflows for clinical genomics reporting.
  • • Work closely with clinical teams, researchers, and PRISM clinical genomics scientists to align data analysis approaches with clinical and research objectives.
  • • Provide bioinformatics expertise to support study design, data interpretation, and publication efforts.
  • • Ensure data handling practices comply with institutional, national, and international regulations for patient data and research data.
  • • Document processes and results to meet both clinical accreditation and research publication standards.
  • • Integrative analysis of multiple next-generation sequencing data sets, in particular Exome Sequencing (DNA and RNA), ChIP-Seq and Methylation sequencing data (DNA / RNA)
  • • Development of pipelines for processing, analysis and visualisation of NGS data
  • • To drive pathway discovery and identify novel targets in metastatic breast cancer
  • • To create visually impactful representations of data for publications and presentations
  • • To supervise and mentor postgraduate students as required
  • • Contribute to the preparation of high-impact peer review scientific publications and to disseminate research findings at national and international meetings
  • • Provide as required, bioinformatics resources for day-to-day use by members of the research team.

Qualifications:

  • • A PhD in bioinformatics /biostatistics/computer science with research in a relevant scientific area
  • • Minimum second class (2.1) honours degree in a relevant subject

Knowledge and Experience (Essential):

  • • Demonstrated use of programming or statistical computing languages (e.g. R, Perl, Python, Java, C++ etc.)
  • • Visualisation of high-dimensional data
  • • Experience of working with Unix/Linux operating systems.
  • • Experience with the application of statistical approaches to biological problems (e.g. statistical testing, linear models)
  • • Experience with application of machine learning methods and mining of large scale public datasets
  • • Proven ability to work independently and as an effective team member
  • • Ability to communicate effectively
  • • Strong organisational skills with the ability to produce results and prioritise tasks

We are all too aware that imposter syndrome and the confidence gap can sometimes stop fantastic candidates putting themselves forward, so please do submit an application — we’d love to hear from you.
