Overview

The Innovative Medicine Center (IMC) invites applications for a talented, driven, and highly motivated researcher to establish their first independent research group. This call targets early-career researchers aiming to lead a team focused on the application of pulsed fields to control cellular permeability, with the goal of developing innovative cancer therapies and drug/gene delivery methods.


Selected candidates will receive a budget of €350,000 for a duration of up to three years. This funding covers the full-time salary of the PI, part-time salaries for the research team, and all essential costs required to implement the proposed research project.


Team Composition & Responsibilities

The Principal Investigator will be responsible for recruiting and leading a research team. The funded group structure must be composed as follows:

  • • Principal Investigator: 1.0 FTE (Full-time)
  • • Postdoctoral Researcher: 0.25 FTE
  • • 3 PhD Students: 0.25 FTE each

Additionally, the PI is required to facilitate international collaboration by attracting at least three foreign researchers for short-term scientific visits to the IMC to contribute to the research execution.

Skills/Qualifications

Specific Professional Requirements (Principal Investigator)

  • • Proven experience in electroporation and electrochemotherapy, specifically in drug and gene delivery research.
  • • Deep knowledge and skills in applying nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) for cell membrane permeability studies.
  • • Expertise in molecular biology methods to investigate biophysical phenomena of strong electric fields and cell membrane damage.
  • • Publication Record: At least 10 scientific articles on electroporation topic published in journals indexed in Clarivate Analytics Web of Science with a citation index. At least five of these must be as the first author.
  • • Experience participating in research projects related to electroporation.

Specific Requirements

Required Qualifications for Team Members

The PI will be responsible for assembling a team that meets the following criteria:

Postdoctoral Fellow (0.25 FTE):

  • • Experience in electroporation, electrochemotherapy, and drug/gene delivery.
  • • Deep knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering.
  • • Experience in the metrology of high electric pulses.
  • • Publication Record: At least 10 scientific articles on electroporation in Web of Science journals (at least one as first author).
  • • Experience participating in research projects related to electroporation.

PhD Students (3 positions, 0.25 FTE each):

  • • Currently enrolled as a 3rd-cycle (doctoral) student in Biology or Biophysics.
  • • Experience in electroporation, electrochemotherapy, or drug/gene delivery research.
  • • Publication Record: At least 3 scientific articles on electroporation in Web of Science journals.
