This position is for a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Human Nutrition, with experience in prospective studies among volunteers. The candidate will work in the Nutrition and Health Platform as part of the Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems and will be based full-time at University College Cork, Ireland.


The Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems is a collaboration between Irish, Northern Irish and UK Institutions who are working on a research programme to rapidly develop innovative and transformative solutions to transition the food system and position Ireland and the UK as a research and innovation global leader for positive and sustainable change in the transition to climate-neutrality by 2050.


This role will be at the Cork Centre for Vitamin D and Nutrition Research at the School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, University College Cork. Working with Professor Mairead Kiely, joint lead of the Co-Centre’s Nutrition and Health Platform, this role is to spearhead the development and implementation of household-based studies on diet, nutrition, sustainability and health, in collaboration with our Nutrition and Health teams at Ulster University, Queens University Belfast, University College Dublin, Leeds and Sheffield Universities.


We welcome applications from highly motivated and enthusiastic candidates for a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Human Nutrition, with considerable experience of conducting research among volunteers, as well as expertise in dietary assessment and analysis, database construction and analysis.


The ideal candidate will have/be:

  • • A PhD qualification in Human Nutrition.
  • • Considerable experience in conducting nutrition studies among human participants.
  • • Expertise in dietary assessment, food data, analysis and construction.
  • • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • • A highly skilled and adaptable individual with a proven ability to report to stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.


Achievement of the expected progression within Post Doc and Senior Post Doc is transferable between the Irish HEI’s. This can be reflected in the starting pay of a PD researcher. Similarly, as the PD scheme is an intergenerational training scheme completion of PD1 or PD 2 levels in one HEI will normally render that researcher ineligible for appointment at a similar level in another Irish HEIResearcher Career Development Framework | Irish Universities Association


Project Title: Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems

Post Duration: 45 Months, Full-Time Post

Skills/Qualifications

The primary focus of the Post-Doctoral Researcher will be research however a particular emphasis during this stage should include;

  • • To conduct a specified programme of research in the area of sustainable healthy diets under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • • To develop and implement a large-scale whole-diet intervention study; to design the database and oversee development of analytical protocols.
  • • Coordination of secure data transfer including permissions and appropriate use from project partners.
  • • Data handling, processing, and protection.
  • • To engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by the Principal Investigator, School or College in order to develop research skills and competencies.
  • • To gain experience in grant writing.
  • • To engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which they are engaged, as directed by, with the support of and under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • • To acquire transferable skills (including project management, business skills and postgraduate mentoring/supervision).
  • • To engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of the Centre, School or College.
  • • To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day-to-day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor.
  • • To carry out administrative work to support the programme of research.
  • • To carry out additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
  • • To contribute to costing research grant proposals and assist in the financial management of a research project.

Specific Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • • A PhD qualification in Human Nutrition
  • • Previous experience implementing prospective nutrition studies.
  • • Expertise in dietary assessment, food data and analysis on a large scale.
  • • Expertise in sustainable healthy diets.
  • • Strong statistical analysis skills in modelling of food and nutrient intake data.
  • • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • • Evidence of excellent project management skills.
  • • A capability of working within a project team to achieve results.
  • • Good communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
  • • A commitment to gaining practical experience working on a research project.
  • • Ability to work well within a team.
