UiB - Knowledge that shapes society

UiB shall be among Europe's leading universities, internationally recognized for high quality in research and education. As a societal institution, we shall contribute to sustainable and democratic development and be an attractive and inclusive place to study and work.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Study of Religion

The Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the Study of Religion, commencing 17.08.2026, or as agreed upon. The position is for a fixed-term period of four (4) years.

About the Project and Research Group:

The postdoctoral position is affiliated with the research group Research and Teaching on Controversial Issues, an interdisciplinary group working on research and education related to contested societal questions. The group investigates how public debates and opinion formation take shape when confronted with complex and conflict-laden topics, including religion, historical memory, gender and sexuality, minorities, racism, climate change, war and conflict, with particular emphasis on their implications for education and teaching.

We are seeking a postdoctoral project that analyzes how algorithm-driven and AI-powered platforms influence public discourse. The project may focus on processes that contribute to polarization, conflict, and the emergence of cultural divides. Furthermore, the project may examine the role of emotions, affect, and aesthetic expressions in the development and circulation of controversies about religion in digital and mediated contexts, and analyze the consequences this has for public debate and opinion formation among young people. Projects relevant to Norwegian and/or Nordic contexts will be prioritized.

The research group is in a phase of strong academic development, and the postdoctoral fellow will play a central role in further developing methodological and research-ethical approaches, particularly within digital ethnography and AI-related research methods. Experience with digital methods and/or ethnographic approaches will therefore be emphasized. The successful candidate will join an active, inclusive, and academically ambitious research environment and will have the opportunity to contribute theoretically, empirically, and methodologically to the further development of the research field.

About the postdoctoral position:

The postdoctoral position is aimed towards qualifying for academic top-level positions.

The successful applicant shall develop a career plan outlining the competencies to be acquired during the postdoctoral period in collaboration with the Department.

The duration of the postdoctoral position is four years, of which 25 per cent of the time comprises other, career-promoting work such as teaching, dissemination of research and administrative tasks. A plan for this part of the position will be developed upon appointment.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

The applicant must have:

  • • A Norwegian doctoral degree (PhD) or an equivalent foreign degree in the study of religion or a closely related field. The doctoral dissertation must have been submitted for evaluation prior to the application deadline, and the PhD must be obtained prior to employment.
  • • An ability to work independently and in a well-structured manner, combined with strong collaborative skills.
  • • Strong proficiency in both written and spoken English.

Applicants must submit a project proposal including a progress plan for the project’s key activities, and a plan for publishing results in internationally recognized channels.

In the assessment of applications, emphasis will be placed on the scientific quality and feasibility of the proposed project and the applicant’s academic qualifications. Further emphasis will be placed on strategic considerations, motivation, and personal suitability.

We Can Offer:

  • • A good and academically stimulating working environment.
  • • Opportunities to build strong professional networks.
  • • A secure and flexible working environment with good welfare benefits.
  • • A workplace in the heart of Bergen – close to both urban life and nature.
  • • Salary as a Postdoctoral Fellow (position code 1352), currently corresponding to a gross annual salary of NOK 657 000 in a full-time position. Salary increases will be based on seniority in the position.
  • • Membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which provides a secure occupational pension scheme, disability and survivor benefits, as well as access to favourable housing loans.
