A postdoctoral research fellowship is available at CARMeN institute UMR6064, University of Rouen (France).

Start: June 2026 for 18 Months

Main goal of the study:

This project aims to characterize per‑ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in environmental samples by combining Trapped Ion Mobility Spectrometry–Time‑of‑Flight (TIMS‑TOF) and Trapped Ion Mobility Spectrometry–Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (TIMS‑FTICR) mass spectrometry. Because PFAS are persistent and chemically diverse pollutants, the workflow is designed to provide both rapid screening and high‑confidence structural identification.

Water and soil extracts will first be prepared using solid‑phase extraction to enrich PFAS and reduce matrix effects. The samples will then be analyzed on the TIMS‑TOF system, where ion mobility separation and accurate mass detection will enable rapid profiling of PFAS and generation of collision cross‑section values useful for distinguishing major compound classes and identifying short‑chain species. This step provides a broad overview of PFAS signatures present in each sample.

Compounds requiring deeper investigation, such as overlapping ions, isomers, or unexpected PFAS, will subsequently be analyzed with TIMS‑FTICR. This instrument offers ultrahigh mass resolution and precise mass accuracy, making it possible to determine unambiguously molecular formulas. Combined with mobility information, it provides strong evidence for structural elucidation, especially for novel or poorly characterized PFAS.

The final stage involves integrating data from both instruments to align mobility profiles, compare collision cross‑sections, and confirm PFAS identities. The resulting workflow will generate detailed PFAS fingerprints for each sample and allow confident identification of known and emerging contaminants. Overall, the project delivers a powerful analytical approach that enhances environmental PFAS monitoring.
