Main goal of the study:

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of several thousand synthetic fluorinated compounds that have been widely used in industry since the 1950s. Their extreme persistence, mobility, and potential toxicity make them priority contaminants for health and environmental agencies. However, only a few dozen PFAS currently have validated analytical standards and targeted methods.

The majority of PFAS present in the environment remain unidentified, unquantified, and unregulated. Conventional targeted approaches are therefore insufficient to capture the true diversity of PFAS, their transformation products, and their precursors.

This project aims at developing non targeted approaches for PFAS characterization based on high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), including FTICR and Orbitrap mass spectrometry. This will offer a unique opportunity to develop untargeted strategies capable of revealing the molecular complexity of PFAS in environmental matrices.

This project aims to fill this critical gap by developing a comprehensive analytical pipeline for the detection, annotation, and prioritization of known and unknown PFAS.

Skills/Qualifications

A PhD in analytical chemistry is required. The candidate shall have a strong background in mass-spectrometry and chromatography.  A strong motivation, good writing and excellent relational skills are also expected. Good knowledge of data processing will be appreciated.
