The proposed project will develop green, miniaturised and high-performance sample preparation workflows for the analysis of contaminants of emerging concern in complex environmental and biological matrices. The core of the project is the use of supramolecular solvents (SUPRAS) and deep eutectic solvents (DES) as sustainable alternatives to conventional organic solvent-intensive extraction methods. These approaches will be explored to improve extraction efficiency, decomplexify samples, reduce matrix effects, decrease solvent consumption and enhance compatibility with advanced mass spectrometry workflows.

The project will target complex chemical mixtures, including wastewater-derived pollutants, pharmaceuticals, industrial chemicals, persistent and mobile chemicals, tire-related chemicals, transformation products and other emerging contaminants. These compounds may enter agricultural and aquatic environments through treated wastewater reuse, runoff, surface water contamination and soil-water transfer, with potential implications for ecosystems, food safety and human health.

The research will combine green analytical chemistry with advanced instrumental platforms, including LC–IMS–HRMS, suspect screening, non-target analysis and MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry imaging. These tools will be used to investigate the occurrence, transformation, uptake, bioaccumulation and spatial distribution of contaminants in matrices such as water, soil, crops, aquatic biota and biological tissues.

The expected outcome is a set of more sustainable, sensitive and comprehensive workflows for environmental exposomics. The project will support a better understanding of contaminant transfer across environmental compartments and, where possible, link chemical profiles with bioanalytical or ecotoxicological responses in a One Health perspective.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to co-develop a proposal for the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 – European Fellowship with IDAEA-CSIC as the host institution. This is an expression of interest for the preparation of a joint proposal; the position will become available only if the proposal is selected for funding.

The proposal will be developed under the supervision of Dr Nicola Montemurro within the Environmental and Water Chemistry for Human Health (ONHEALTH) group at IDAEA-CSIC, Barcelona, Spain. IDAEA-CSIC is an internationally recognised research institute with strong expertise in environmental analytical chemistry, high-resolution mass spectrometry, contaminants of emerging concern, environmental fate, exposure assessment and One Health-related research.

The selected candidate will contribute to the scientific design and writing of the proposal and, if funded, will lead the development and application of innovative analytical workflows based on SUPRAS, DES, miniaturised sample preparation, LC–MS/HRMS, ion mobility, suspect screening, non-target analysis and/or mass spectrometry imaging.

The fellowship will offer the opportunity to develop an independent research profile at the interface of green analytical chemistry, advanced mass spectrometry, environmental exposomics and environmental health, while working within a dynamic and international research environment.
