Requirements
The selection procedure is open for all individuals, who meet the requirements set out in Articles 113 and 116.2.3) of the Act of 20 July 2018 – Law on Higher Education and Science, and who meet the following eligibility criteria according to § 165 of the Statute of the Jagiellonian University:
• holding at least a doctoral degree;
• having relevant scientific achievements;
• taking active part in scientific life.

Additional requirements and expectations:

Eligibility and project criteria are indicated in detail on the NCN website - regulations for OPUS 26 LAP – – Annex to NCN Council Resolution No. 50/2023 of May 11, 2023.

In addition, an ideal candidate will:
1. hold a PhD degree in biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics or any other related discipline of science.
2. have experience in biochemistry/biophysics as well as structural biology techniques and have a fundamental interest in single particle Cryo-EM.
3. have published at least one scientific article in a peer-reviewed journal as the first author (if you have a special reason not to have a publication, please mention it in the application);
4. show a good level of leadership and project management skills;
5. be proficient in spoken and written English;
6. fulfil requirements stemming from Regulations on awarding funding for research tasks funded by the National Science Centre as regards research projects, including:
• obtained a doctoral degree in the year of employment in the project or within 7 years prior to January 1 of the year of employment in the project. This period may be extended by the time spent on long-term (over 90 days) documented sickness benefits or rehabilitation benefits due to incapacity for work. In addition, this period may be extended by the number of months of leave related to the care and upbringing of children granted on the terms set out in the Labour Law, and in the case of women - by 18 months for each child born or adopted, if this method of indicating breaks in the scientific career is more favourable;
• obtained a doctoral degree in an entity other than Jagiellonian University, or completed at least 10-month, continuous and documented post-doctoral internship in an entity other than Jagiellonian University and in a country other than the country of obtaining the doctoral degree;
• dr hab. Sebastian Glatt was not a supervisor or assistant supervisor of candidate’s doctoral dissertation;
• at the time of receiving remuneration, they will not be receiving any other remuneration paid from the funds granted to research projects under NCN calls under the heading of direct costs;
• in the period of receiving remuneration they will be receiving no remuneration from another employer pursuant to an employment contract, including an employer with registered office outside of Poland.

Project Title:

Opus 26 (LAP), K/NCN/000383: The role of tRNA thiolation in human disease

Project description :

The candidate will be working on an NCN-funded project aimed at confirming our understanding of the interplay between tRNA thiolation, cellular homeostasis, and its contribution to serious human pathologies. Given that tRNA thiolation is crucial for the survival of neurons and certain types of cancer cells, this project will provide the basis for targeting potential treatment strategies for rare diseases, neurodegeneration, and cancer. The ultimate goal of the project is to elucidate the human tRNA thiolation reaction and understand the pathological consequences of its malfunction. In executing the project, we plan to combine the expertise of teams from Krakow and Vienna in the areas of cell biology, mouse genetics, tRNA biology, and structural biology to complementarily address the presented research problem. The selected candidate will work in research group of dr hab. Sebastian Glatt at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology https://glatt-lab.pl/ in the beautiful city of Krakow, Poland.

Scope of duties 

according to the Work Regulations of the Jagiellonian University Annex 1 to the Work Regulations of the Jagiellonian University – Model scopes of responsibilities and duties of academic teachers.
The candidates duties will be as follows:
• planning the experiments carried out as part of the project,
• collecting and drawing conclusions from the data obtained in order to plan further experiments,
• assisting less experienced members of the project team in other research carried out in the group,
• supervising the daily work of technicians and assisting the PI in the preparation of figures and manuscripts for publication.
The candidate will be responsible for, among other things, the expression and purification of individual pathway components and reconstitution of in vitro thiolation reactions. He /she will check the interaction of CTU1/CTU2 and variants thereof with URM1 and tRNA and prepare the samples for single particle cryo-EM analyses.

The course of selection procedure
The first stage of the selection procedure is the formal assessment of the submitted documents.
