Research project
This post-doctorate offer is part of the research project ‘Gender and health in migration: Study of health trajectories differentiated by migratory status and gender’.
France has 7.3 million immigrants, or 10.7% of the total population (Insee, 2023). This proportion is rising, and the proportion of women is increasing as well. The immigrant population is slightly more likely to be unemployed than the non-immigrant population, and is more concentrated in precarious employment, all of which have a negative impact on health. According to the existing literature, the immigrant population, which tends to be young and active, arrives in good health (Healthy Immigrant Effect), but its initial advantage over the non-immigrant population is reduced over time as a result of unfavourable socio-economic conditions and changes in behaviour (Convergence Theory). In addition, there is gender inequality in health within the general population and the immigrant population. Recent literature highlights a double health disadvantage for immigrant women and a greater deterioration in their health over time (Gkiouleka et al., 2018; Pellet & de Talancé, 2023).
The aim of this project is to analyse differences in health trajectories within the population according to two factors, migration status and gender, using French longitudinal data from the Working Conditions Survey (Dares, 2013, 2016, 2019).
The post-doctoral researcher's work will fall within the following research areas:
- Axis 1: Is there a double differential in health (physical and mental) between immigrant women in France and non-immigrant men, and if so, how does this change over time?
Area 2: What role do levels of integration, working conditions, living conditions, access to healthcare and discrimination play in widening or narrowing these inequalities over time?
Job expectations
The final output will be the co-authorship of an article submitted to a leading international peer-reviewed scientific journal. The post-doctoral researcher will be required to write an up-to-date review of the literature on the research topic, including a survey of the latest publications. He/she will be able to benefit from the bibliographic files already created by the members of the project. The post-doctoral researcher will take charge of the Working Conditions survey and construct the panel of individuals interviewed over at least two waves. He/she will carry out the econometric analyses using dedicated software. Using the longitudinal dimension of the data, the aim will be to compare the health trajectories of immigrant and non-immigrant men and women. The aim will also be to identify the various socio-economic determinants that could explain health inequalities and their evolution (employment status, working conditions, access to healthcare, the transition to retirement, social capital, etc.). An index decomposition method could be implemented.
The post-doctoral researcher will have the opportunity to present the initial results at an internal seminar and submit preliminary versions to conferences.
Working environment
The person recruited will be part of the Érudite laboratory and will have a full workstation. He or she will participate in the activities of the research team. She/he will be supervised by Sandra Pellet (MCF), a teacher-researcher in economics. Sandra Pellet has been working on health and migration issues in various countries for many years. The post-doctoral student will be more informally co-supervised by S. Juin (UPEC, Ined) and will benefit from close scientific collaboration with the two other colleagues involved in this project: E. Defebvre (Paris I, CES) and M. de Talancé (G. Eiffel, Erudite, Dial). He/she may participate, as co-author or presenter, in various seminars and conferences. Regular meetings will be organised with the supervisors, as well as working meetings with the other members of the project.
