Job position

The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary research team in the ERC Starting Grant project CAROLUS, under the supervision of E. Arioli (PI). S/he is expected to both perform research independently and coordinate her work with other team members and project partners.


Functions

The position is part of the ERC-funded project CAROLUS, which investigates the global afterlives of the “Matter of Charlemagne”. This specific research task focuses mainly on the study of the cavalhadas in Brazil, popular performances inspired by medieval chivalric traditions.


Main responsibilities:

1. Conduct in-depth research on the cavalhadas in Brazil, analyzing their connections with the medieval epic of Carolus Magnus and modern literary traditions, their transformations over time, and their relationship with other comparable cultural forms.

2. Collect, document, and analyze oral, visual, and archival sources (fieldwork, interviews, recordings, iconographic materials etc.). Document live performances, gather local historical materials, and conduct interviews with participants and elders to trace the evolution of the tradition.

3. Contribute to the writing of academic publications, the editorial coordination of collective volumes, and support the overall scientific and organizational development of the project.

4. Participate actively in the enrichment of the project’s digital platform (including video editing, metadata structuring, and archival organization).

5. Collaborate actively with other research team members and external project partners.

6. Work closely with local institutions in Brazil to valorize their collections and cultural heritage, and engage in outreach and dissemination initiatives.

7. Ensure full compliance with ERC open science and open access policies: all publications, data, and research outputs produced within the project must follow the Horizon Europe open access protocols and be deposited in open repositories, in accordance with ERC guidelines.

Fieldwork is expected : willingness and availability to undertake intensive fieldwork in Brazil are required.


Job position requirements (skills/languages/required experience)


Required educations

PhD in Literature, Arts, Cultural Heritage, Anthropology or related fields. A demonstrated interest in Brazilian traditions related to Charlemagne is expected, with at least two open access publications in this domain.

LANGUAGES (Required)

Working proficiency (spoken and written) in Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish.

Basic knowledge of Latin.


Digital Skills (Required)

Experience in video editing, digital archiving, and the documentation of oral and performative traditions.

Familiarity with digital humanities tools and content management systems (CMS).


Professional experience (Required)

Proven experience in fieldwork research, particularly in Brazil.

Strong academic writing skills and capacity to contribute to peerreviewed publications.

Familiarity with academic research standards, ethical protocols, and open science practices.

Expertise in archival research techniques, including cataloging, digitization, and inventory management.


Other Skills (Desirable)

Solid knowledge of the medieval epic of Charlemagne (Matter of France) and its global circulation.

Ability to work collaboratively within a multicultural and interdisciplinary research environment.

Good knowledge of Brazilian cultural contexts, especially in relation to popular performances and religious traditions.

Prior publications or documented research on Charlemagnerelated traditions in Brazil.

Strong theoretical and/or practical background in medieval studies, performance studies, sociology, and/or anthropology.
